Hardcover. moderate wear to top and bottom edges tiny nick in cloth at bottom of front cover; jacket is edgeworn with various small chips and tears larger chip at top left corner of front panel and extending into top of spine that has removed quite a bit of the spine title. SIGNED by the author as Gore Vidal on the title page. The first of Vidal's three mystery novels under the Box pseudonym published in rapid succession in the early 1950s after which he abandoned the genre even though the books remained in print in paperback for many years thereafter. Francis Nevins's verdict on the Box mysteries all of which featured the protagonist Peter Cutler Sargeant III was that "judged as formal detective novels all three are mediocre but Vidal's guided tour through the worlds of art politics and high society entertains us royally with countless gleefully sardonic jabs at every target in sight." This one is backgrounded in the ballet world. Signed by Author . E.P. Dutton & Co. hardcover books

1957014037Boston Toronto: Little Brown and Company 1957. INSCRIBED TO JOANNE WOODWARD AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper. "To Miss Joanne Woodward-for whom the beautiful part of Ellen was written- Gore Vidal Aug. 1957". One small area of rubbing and brown stain lower 1/3 of spine. Small water mark at top of rear cover. Jacket is darkened at creases some chipping with 1" piece missing from spine at lower portion of "Planet". Light water-stain top of rear panel. Original $2.95 price on front blurb. Photo of Cyril Ritchard and Eddie Mayehoff on rear panel. This is the play based on the television script for an episode of Goodyear Television Playhouse aired on May 8 1955. The play starring Mr. Ritchard who also directed the play ran 388 performances in 1957-58. The play was then made into a Hollywood film starring Jerry Lewis in 1960. We can find no evidence that Miss Woodward ever played the role of Ellen Spelding. Sylvia Davis is listed in the playbill for the TV episode. Sarah Marshall is cast as Ellen in the Broadway play. Joan Blackman played her in the film adaptation. We know from biographical sources that Miss Woodward was a close friend of the author. Some reports suggest that she was engaged to Vidal prior to marrying Paul Newman. Vidal noted that it was all a stunt to attrract Newman's attention to Miss Woodward. She shared a house with Vidal in Los Angeles for a short time. Furthermore Paul Newman shared living quarters with Vidal at an earlier time. An unusual association copy of a work by the acclaimed American writer 1925-2012. Signed by Author. First Edition. Green and White Cloth. Light edge and Corner Wear/Chipped Dust Jacket. Octavo. ".Gore Vidal again demonstrates in these seven stories that maturity of craftsmanship and individuality which has gained him an important place among writers. He has wit; he has variety; he has a style. Of the hundreds of new writers to come out of the Second World War only a handful have continued to develop to grow. He has survived notoriety and early success to achieve a career of letters that is unique a body of work that is substantial a perception of reality which is precise and illuminating. After reading 'A Moment of Green Laurel' published here for the first time one appreciates the comment of The Times Literary Supplement: 'It is quite possible for a successful young novelist like Mr. Gore Vidal to live in America and prevent anything he does not want from impinging on his consciousness and as he matures a correlation between his standards and those he does not follow. From the fusion a peculiarly American literature developes.'." Purchase with confidence: all books gradings and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile.
