Cosa ancor più importante, l’organizzazione della molecola suggeriva immediatamente la soluzione di due dei più antichi misteri della biologia: l’archiviazione e la replicazione dell’informazione ereditaria – un problema sollevato dieci anni prima da Erwin Schrödinger nelle memorabili conferenze che sono alla base di Che cos’è la vita? In quegli anni sopravvivevano ancora, in biologia, spezzoni di vitalismo – l’idea che i processi che governano le basi della vita si collochino al di là delle normali leggi della fisica e della chimica. La doppia elica introduceva nella confusa complessità della biologia, nella sterminata varietà delle forme, un elemento unificante e una nuova chiave interpretativa – semplice, addirittura elementare. Il cinquantenario della rivoluzione del DNA ha coinciso con la pubblicazione della prima bozza della sequenza del genoma umano, e ciò ha offerto a Watson l’occasione per una illuminante e insieme spregiudicata lettura della sua storia e dei suoi problemi. Da molecola esoterica qual era, attraente solo per pochi specialisti, il DNA ha finito per diventare il cuore stesso di una tecnologia che sta trasformando la vita di tutti noi, sollevando ardue questioni di ordine pratico, sociale ed etico: si pensi alla terapia genica e alla diagnosi prenatale, agli organismi geneticamente modificati in agricoltura e all’impronta genetica per la prevenzione della criminalità. In questa ampia sintesi Watson non si limita a una illustrazione tecnica, ma prende vigorosamente posizione sui temi più scottanti oggi sul tappeto, sottolineando la necessità di sgomberare il campo da numerose pregiudiziali ideologiche.
