L'altruismo si estinguerebbe in fretta dalla faccia della terra. Invece l'altruismo c'è, nell'uomo come negli animali. Come spiegare questo dilemma? David Sloan Wilson è il biologo che ha dato una risposta a questo antico rompicapo evoluzionistico (ma anche sociale e politico). Inutile e fuorviante concentrarsi sulla definizione di "altruismo": qui si parla in maniera non equivoca di azioni altruistiche e non di pensieri o sentimenti altruisti, ben difficili da definire. Un'azione è altruistica se non avvantaggia chi la compie (o addirittura lo danneggia) mentre avvantaggia chi la riceve. Per anni si è tentato di dare una spiegazione a questo comportamento apparentemente autolesionista negandone di fatto l'esistenza: un atto a prima vista altruista veniva analizzato dal punto di vista del gene (un gene "egoista", appunto), per mostrare che in realtà non è tale; vista con gli occhi del gene, la morte di un individuo può essere vantaggiosa se altre copie identiche dello stesso gene sopravviveranno , in altri individui...
