L'orrore per l'incesto, i sentimenti di odio e amore verso le figure genitoriali, legati al complesso edipico, trovano nel raffronto con la psicologia "primitiva" conferme e spunti per un ulteriore approfondimento.
Freud aveva appreso attraverso casi celebri qual'è il significato inconscio degli animali nella psiche infantile. Nella psiche del primitivo, il totem ricopre un ruolo analogo: è l'immagine del padre, centro di sentimenti ambivalenti di odio e amore .. Introduzione di K. In "Totem e tabù" (1913), testo fondamentale per chiunque voglia conoscere e comprendere le origini della psicoanalisi, Sigmund Freud si propone di svelare il significato originario del totemismo. Le prime prescrizioni e i primi divieti morali delle società arcaiche vengono spiegati come reazioni all'evento del parricidio originario, dal quale deriva il concetto di crimine, che porta alla creazione dei due fondamentali tabù del totemismo: omicidio e incesto. Questo senso di colpa creativo non si è estinto, ma è attivo sotto forma di nevrosi, al fine di produrre nuove prescrizioni morali per espiare azioni vissute inconsciamente come "criminose", ma che in realtà sono soltanto impulsi ostili mai tradotti nella realtà.
