Half-title title and dedication page to Baron Auckland all present. Folding frontis Map and all plates present. Signed Binding by Brentanos New York in late 19th or early 20th century full dark green buckram with scrollwork decoration blindstamped in both boards with gilt borders. 5 raised bands and 6 compartments all with gilt borders. Titles stamped in gold in C2 date in C6. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Square tight and very clean pages with little or no foxing throughout. A spot here or there and a bit on the boarders of only some of the plates but not affecting the plates themselves. Truly a remarkably well-preserved interior for almost 200 years old. Fairly mild edge-wear particularly on the bottom edge and tips. A hint of rubbing to hinges but quite minor. Spine toned to almost black but supple and fresh. 'In 1827 Kinsey made a tour in Portugal with the intention of making the country better known to the English people. From his journals and a series of letters written to his friend Thomas Haynes Bayly as well as from historical and other sources Kinsey published Portugal Illustrated 1828 an interesting account of the country and well illustrated with engravings by G. Cooke and Skelton from drawings chiefly made by a companion during his tour. It was dedicated to Lord Auckland to whom Kinsey was chaplain' Oxford DNB. <br /> 4to pp. ii engraved title xvii ii 500 6; with frontis colored costume plate; a double-page map and a double page of the "The University of Coimbra"; four engraved leaves of music and 26 plates including nine colored aquatints of costume; several illustrations in the text; some light foxing on the "University" plate a small crescent of paper replace in the margin of page three otherwise an especially clean copy. Handsomely rebound in half red morocco gilt title on spine. The costume plates are by Pugin and colored by Pyal and in this copy distributed throughout the volume. Kinsey founded the Institute in 1947 in part ""to create the most complete and most scientific data bank on human sexuality ever compiled Kinsey hired and carefully trained a team of interviewers to gather more case histories and he also collected a staggering cache of books 'how to' manuals primitive artifacts and implements of an erotic or sexual nature; these were housed at the Institute's library"" ANB. Considering the translated erotica he published through the Kama Shastra Society Burton likely would have appreciated Kinsey's work. Kinsey had an interest in Burton's: in 1948 in fact he enlisted Gershon Legman best known for his scholarly studies of erotic humor as a bibliographer to ""help locate such obscure rarities as the 16 original volumes of Richard Burton's Arabian Nights with their complex and lengthy footnotes on Levantine sexuality"" Mikita Brottman Funny Peculiar. Title and library marking written on spine in white ink.Interior generally clean with foxing mostly confined to free endpapers; Kinsey's inscription still easily legible. Front joint tender small old repair to foot of rear joint; boards with light edge-wear mild toning to decorations.
