Die von Foes veröffentlichten Anmerkungen boten hingegen das Wesentliche des wissenschaftlichen Materials das zur Korrektur der Editions principes verwendet wurde. Johann Friedrich Pierer 1767-1832 Landphysikus und als Lehrer am Anatomischen Institut in Altenburg beschäftigte sich intensiv mit der antiken Medizin insbesondere mit den Schriften des Hippokrates dessen Werke er neu übersetzte und kommentierte. 1798 begann Pierer mit der Herausgabe der Medizinischen Nationalzeitung für Deutschland die großen Anklang fand. 1799 erstand er die Richterische Offizin. 1801 begründete er ein eigenes buchhändlerisches Geschäft unter der Firma Literarisches Comptoir vervollständigte seine medizinische Zeitschrift und begann mit der Herausgabe eines großen medizinischen Realwörterbuches. In Altenburg gewann Pierer für die von ihm betriebene Hofbuchdruckerei Johann Ludwig Choulant als Mitarbeiter! unknown

"The engraving which accompanies this memoir is from the bust in the British Museum which was found near Albano amongst some ruins supposed to have been the villa of Marcus Varro. It offers a very fine specimen of Greek art. It is conjectured to be the head of Hippocrates as it corresponds with that on a medal which was in the collection of Fluvius Ursinus and engraved in 1606 in the "Illustrium Imagines" and said to have been struck in honour of the great physician by the people of Cos. The bust appears to have been taken at an advanced age probably not less that eighty years and he is represented bald which agrees with the description given of him by Soranus his biographer. The were similar busts in the Capitoline Museum in the French collection at the Villa Albani and in Mr. R.P. Knight's collection." Pettigrew unknown
