This volume analyses the role of allegory in Marguerite Porete's Mirror of Simple Souls, the oldest known mystical work written in French, and the only surviving medieval text by a woman writer executed as a heretic. Marguerite Porete's Mirror of Simple Souls, dating probably to the 1290s, is the oldest known mystical work written in French, and the only surviving medieval text by a woman writer executed as a heretic. This volume analyses its use of interconnected allegories that describe the soul's approach toward God in terms of human social relationships. These include romantic love between lovers in same-sex and mixed-sex pairs, relations among people of differing social rank such as servants and nobles, and rich and poor engaged in economic transactions such as taxation and gift-giving. Gender, rank, and exchange serve as remarkably versatile allegories for spiritual states. Porete uses comparison as an organizing principle that underlies her supple and creative use of allegory, personification, parables, metaphors, similes, proverbs, and glosses. The theologian invites her audience to cross boundaries among literal and figurative registers of meaning, in ways that are emblematic of the soul's ultimate leap toward the divine. Porete's social allegories, the author contends, can provide us with valuable evidence of a medieval thinker's conceptions of God, gender, language, and human capacity for change. paperback 15x25 cm, 272 pagina's. ISBN 9789077503492. Paperback, 237 p., 210 x 297 mm. ISBN 9782503541570. The book is the first edition of the Old Turkish commentary on the Vimalakirtinirdesa-Sutra. All fragments that were identified belonging to this commentary are now preserved in the Berlin Turfan Collection. The relevant commentary may have been based on a Chinese text, whose author was a representative of the Tiantai school. However, some lines in the Old Turkish version are the additions of the Uyghur translator or, more specifically, author and clearly show the strong influence of the Yogic'ra school, which was then studied with keen interest in Dunhuang, the neighbouring city of Turfan. This fact indicates the close relationship between this Uyghur author and the Buddhism in Dunhuang. Moreover, the Old Turkish version of the Vimalakirtinirdesa-Sutra (published by Peter Zieme as Berliner Turfantexte XX) is preserved. The comparison between these two texts shows, however, that both texts were independently translated into Old Turkish. Languages: German.
Paperback, 230 p., + 88 Plates, 210 x 295 mm. ISBN 9782503505145. This Buddhist text has a long history and enjoyed great popularity in many Asian countries. It incorporates dogmatic treatises and reflects several ancient cults devoted to the historical Buddha Sakyamuni as well as several Bodhisattvas. Of the three Chinese translations form the original Sanskrit text the one by Yi Jing (7th century) became the basis of further traditions. Fragments of a translation from this Chinese version into Old Turkish around the 10th century, were found by the numerous and famous Central Asian expeditions in Gansu as well as in the Turfan oasis. For the critical edition of the forewords and the first two chapters, all surviving manuscripts and blockprints (altogether two in Petersburg and about twenty in the Turfan Collection of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften) have been collated. Parts missing in the Petersburg manuscripts are here edited for the first time. The edition is accompanied by a German translation as wellas a commentary on textual and Buddhological problems. All available remnants are reproduced in facsimile on 120 plates. Languages: German.
