Paperback, 224 p., 155 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503508917. This volume presents a collection of selected papers worked out for the XXth International Congress of History of Science held in July 1997 in Liege The first part analyzes interrelations between the exact sciences, chemistry and physics on the one hand, and life sciences on the other hand. It is well known that in many fields of biological sciences, mainly in those working with experimental methods, chemical and physical knowledge was integrated but the historic development of that interrelation is not yet known and cannot be explained enough in all details until the present day. By searching for the events in the past, historians of science find out that introducing physical and chemical methods and knowledge into life sciences was not a simple but very complex historical process. The second part was constructed during the centenary of E.B. Wilson's pioneering book The Cell in Development and Inheritance (1896), with an eye on this tradition of biological research. Wilson attempted to integrate cytology, embryology, and the chromosome theory of inheritance into a common cellular framework. It was only in the late 1970s that the synthesis now called cell biology, developmental biology and developmental genetics came into existence. The work carried out in Zurich under E. Hadorn's supervision was brought to light. Concepts and paths of research were defined, for example: homeosis, physiological genetics, 'body plans' allometry, homologies of process, evolution as 'bricolage' and finally a critical essay on different perspectives on development. Paperback, X+185 p., 15 x 23. ISBN 9780888448170. Charters are among the richest sources for the history of medieval Europe. The historical sub-discipline of diplomatics is devoted to the study of these documents. In Charters, Cartularies, and Archives, a distinguished international group of diplomatists address thirteen cases of transmission and preservation of medieval documents. A recurrent theme in the volume is the actual preservation of individual charters, but the content of originals was transmitted in other ways as well. Several chapters discuss questions relating to recopied originals, cartularies, and a range of other archival practices for retaining documents during the Middle Ages. Many of the authors focus on how documents were organized in archives and in cartularies during the period. Others discuss the notions of 'original document' and 'copy' - both their relationship to each other, and to the legal validity of the document in question. The volume ranges over a wide chronological and geographical scope, with contributions spread across Europe and the Middle Ages from the eighth-century Lombard kingdom to late medieval Douai. Several chapters focus on institutions in medieval France, but areas such as Scandinavia, Bohemia, and Italy are also represented. The chapters of this volume derive from papers delivered at a colloquium of the Colloquium international de diplomatique in Princeton and in New York in autumn 1999. Languages : English.
Hardback, 634 p., 5 cartes et plans, 210 x 270 mm. ISBN 9782503507507. Hardback, XXII+446 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503510866. This publication focuses on the genesis of modern Chaucer criticism, which was heavily formed by German philologists, and emphasizes the 'Chaucerphilology` of 1870-1914. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, German-speaking scholars played a decisive role in founding and shaping the study of medieval and early modern English language and culture. During this process, aesthetic and literary enthusiasms were gradually replaced, first by broadly comparative and then by increasingly narrow scientistic practices, all confusingly subsumed under the term 'philology'. Towards 1871, German and Austrian Anglicists were successful at imposing-- for about 30 years -- many of their philological discoursive practices on their English-speaking counterparts by focusing on strict textual criticism, chronology, historical linguistics, prosody, and literary history. After World War I, these philological practices were rejected in the U.K. and the United States because they were 'Made in Germany', but have remained essential features of German medieval scholarship until the present day. This book offers a case study of these foundational developments by investigating the reception of Geoffrey Chaucer by eminent scholars such as V.A. Huber, W. Hertzberg, B. ten Brink, J. Zupitza, E. Fluegel, and J. Koch. The narrative of their nationalist, scientist, and self-fashioning efforts is complemented by a comprehensive annotated bibliography of German Chaucer criticism between 1793 and 1948. Hardback, 524 p., 155 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503507392.
