Paperback, XXVI+350 p., 150 x 230 mm. ISBN 9782503510163. The interest of the writers of these essays in the intricacies and implications of translation in the Middle Ages,or of the translation of medieval texts in the modern period, has resulted in a diverse and intellectually stimulating volume. The papers in this volume, written in either English, French, or Spanish, approach translation from a wide variety of perspectives and offer a range of interpretations of the concept of translation. The volume contains essays ranging in time from the Anglo Saxon period to the present, and in topic from medieval recipe books to arguments in favour of women administering the sacrament. Languages studied include non-European languages as well as Latin and numerous European vernaculars as both source and target languages. As any translator or student of translation quickly becomes aware, it is impossible to divorce language from culture. All the contributors to this volume struggle with the complexities of translation as a cultural act, even when the focus would seem to be specifically linguistic. It is these complexities which lend the study of the theory and practice of translation in the Middle Ages its enduring fascination. Languages : English.

An important report on the scientific investigation of the transport of sand by wind, providing valuable information with ample mathematical equations and data charts. During his expeditions into the Libyan Desert, Bagnold had been fascinated by the shapes of the sand dunes, and after returning to England he built a wind tunnel and conducted the experiments which are the basis of this report. Bagnold made significant contributions to the scientific understanding of desert structures such as sand dunes, ripples and sheets. He developed the dimensionless Bagnold number and Bagnold formula for characterizing sand flow. He also proposed a model for singing sands and made contributions to the science of sedimentology.

1 set of stapled pages, Planetary and Space Science, Pergamon, 2001, pp. 511-522. With a handwritten card. Nice copy for this off-print with a handwritten accompanying cardboard sent to Dr. Jacques Lacroix. J.-L. Steinberg was a founding father of radioastronmy in France. His friend, J. Lacroix, had prepared a Ph.D (Univ. of Paris) under his leadership, in the early 60s. They worked together on experiences in the field of radioastronomy that were performed in the year 1964-1966 with "Rubis" rockets. These rockets, which were the fist 100% French expandable launch system, were launched from French-owned Hammaguir launch site, in Western Sahara. In the accompanying card, J.-L. Steinberg briefly explained that this publication was a summary of his career as a scientist. This text is an impressive and very interesting overview on his own life, by a man who was a survivor of nazis camps (most of his family was murdered in Auschwitz or on the way to Dora). Anglais
