Omdat die stereotypen zich tevens buiten het domein van de poezie voordoen, geeft Janssens tegelijk inzicht in het bredere vertoog over de Vlaams-Nederlandse culturele samenwerking en integratie. Hij levert daarmee een opmerkelijke bijdrage aan de literaire geschiedschrijving in de Lage Landen tot aan de dag van vandaag, op een manier die ons actuele oordeel prettig relativeert en die spelenderwijs een schat aan nieuw materiaal uit de eerste hand verstrekt.

The Gesta Alberonis records the exploits of Albero von Montreuil (Archbishop of Trier, 1131-1152), portrayed as a daring hero doing battle on behalf of the 'Liberty of the Church'. During the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, political and ecclesiastical rulers alike sought to clarify the responsibilities, rights, and obligations they had in common and those that were unique to their different but related kinds of rule. Balderich opens the Deeds with explicit reference to these struggles for power, which later came to be known as the Investiture Controversy. This conflict between the church and the German emperor centred on the question of control over the appointment of bishops: clergy and princes alternately allied with and fought against one another, seeking to consolidate their respective powers through different structures of governance. As a young cleric in Metz, Albero resisted an imperially appointed bishop. His audacious use of disguise while travelling on secret missions for his church show him to be very much a folk-hero. And once Albero had been appointed archbishop, Balderich characterizes him as the lynchpin in the actions of popes and kings. Albero ensured the election of King Conrad III, and led troops on campaigns in Italy and northern Germany. But it was Albero's rule as prince-bishop that proved paramount. Albero directed the spiritual affairs of the church in Trier while exercising political rule over the principality, and it is this aspect that is Balderich's principal focus, and which makes the Deeds the remarkable document that it is. Walter of Chatillon, the twelfth-century Latin poet now famed for his satirical lyrics, acquired international renown in the Middle Ages for his epic on Alexander the Great, the Alexandreis. This work did for the Middle Ages what Vergil had done for the Romans, proving the ability of the moderni to rival the ancients in learning and the arts. The Alexandreis immediately joined the Aeneid in the medieval paideia and was read in schoolrooms throughout Europe in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The Alexandreis enters into the twelfth-century debate about education. The intellectual world was rapidly changing, as the schools became specialized and professionalized, threatening the hitherto secure position of the liberal arts and Latin literature in the educational curriculum. At the same time, translations from Arabic and Greek, not only of the works of Aristotle, but also of Arabic philosophers, had begun to alter the concerns and methodologies of Western scholars. Theologians increasingly used Hebrew commentaries in their studies of the Hebrew Scriptures. The awareness of the intellectual achievements both of the ancients and of highly-civilized non-Christian contemporary cultures had reached a new peak. Twelfth-century intellectuals were presented with the challenge of assimilating the flow of new works and ideas into western historiography and the Latin world-view.
