Contemporary flexible textured calf Heinn Co. binding minor rubbing shelfwear still an excellent exemplar. This exceptional souvenir photo album visually documents the efforts of the British Columbia government to relieve the overcrowding at the Provincial Hospital for the Insane in New Westminster in the first decade of the 20th Century. In 1904 after appropriating 1000 acres of the traditional lands of the Kwiketlem First Nation peoples Dr. Charles Doherty focused on clearing over 180 hecatres of the flood plain constructing dikes building state-of-the-art farm buildings to provide purpose therapeutic occupational training and food for the new hospital which would later become Riverview. The Progressive Era movement to reform treatment of the mentally ill was to not only free them from deplorable asylum conditions which reformers such as Julia Lathrop Adolf Meyer and Eleanor Clark Slagle believed only increased otherwise curable mental illnesses but also provide training to gain employment upon discharge from the hospital. Doherty insisted on paying the patients a small salary to work and live at the farm and the Holstein herd which began with 22 cows in 1910 grew swiftly after importing 50 more from New York and Carnation Farms of Seattle so that that by the end of 1912 the farm was producing nearly 50000 gallons of milk with prize cows capturing top prizes at local farm exhibitions. The photographs open with shot of the gate to Colony Farm cottages and dining halls for patients barns and milking stations stables hay barn water tower silos corrals pumping station and dairy facilities. In addition there are several photos showing land clearing burgeoning silage corn fields nurseries horse-drawn seeding cutting hay oats and steam threshing.The final photo shows the initial reinforced concrete Essondale Hospital with red brick facades in the final stages of construction and would open later in 1913. One of the photos includes an office calendar dated November 1912 while two others show the visit of Prince Arthur Duke of Connaught 1850-1942 the first Governor General of Canada to be a member of the British Royal Family and his wife Princess Louise to the successful Colony Farm Sept. 11 1912. The Colony farm was expanded in 1918 by another 700 acres and would continue to thrive through World War II. Unfortunately in 1946 a series of arson fires destroyed most of the documents of the dairy operation and Colony Farm and eventually due to budgetary pressures the farm closed in 1983. The halcyon intentions of Manchester and Doherty would later be undone during the 20th Century as budgetary restraints prevented expansion or proper treatments so that by 1956 the Essondale Hospital was housing 4306 patients and 2200 staff members in buildings designed for 1800 patients. In addition medical practices of the time ranged from electroshock therapy and forced sterilization and would eventually be closed in 1992 as the de-institutionalization movement gained favor. Moore 1887-1963 launched his photographic career with Byron Harmon in Banff Alberta and by 1912 was established in Vancouver specializing in panoramic photographs after 1913 and later forming a partnership with Wilfred F. McConnell buying the Canadian Photo Co. He retired from the firm in 1953. Light rubbing and wear to wraps. All photos captioned in print on mounts; informational text box applied to inside front wrapper. One photo detached from otherwise clean. An early 20th-century promotional booklet for the Monte Verde plantation operated near Vera Cruz by the Continental Commercial Company of St. Louis. The work is comprised of sixteen halftone photographs showing the grounds the laborers and the site’s pineapples chestnut trees lemon trees banana trees coconut trees rubber trees and palm trees. The last six photographs are all related to the cultivation of coffee. According to the book’s introductory text the photographs were taken by the manager of the property. The Continental Commercial Company was founded in 1903 and had at least four separate plantations along the Veracruz and Pacific Railway. Not in OCLC. unknown

Even tanning and old folds to broadsheet; minor wear to map old folds a few manuscript additions to the area of the map two contemporary marginal ink stamps. A pair of unrecorded Missouri real estate promotional items from the early 20th century. The first is a broadsheet entitled Howell County Had a Fine Year in Nineteen Fifteen. The two pages of text tout the productive year of the agricultural scene in the county which was awarded the blue ribbon two years in a row at the Missouri State Fair. They also detail the amount of available land for cultivation and grazing as well as the production of livestock and other products for several towns in Howell County including West Plains Mountain View Willow Springs Brandsville Hutton Valley Olden Burnham and Pomona. The broadsheet was issued by a land speculator in the area named C.P. Harper & Son who also issued the accompanying plat map of Howell County. Two notations - one in blue pencil and the other in red pencil - indicate two parcels of land presumably sold by Harper. The margins of the map contain two small ink stamps belonging to "C.P. Harper & Son Real Estate Brokers West Plains Mo." We could locate neither of these items in OCLC or auction history. West Plains Journal unknown

FIRST EDITION. Issued in the aftermath of the Great Blizzard of December 1947. Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley was a pioneering photographer famous for taking incredibly detailed pictures of snowflakes; he developed a method of quickly photographing them as they lay on a blanket of black velvet. Together with his co-author W.J. Humphreys he produced the magnificent work of microphotography Snow Crystals 1931. Regarding this booklet a note on the copyright page states the "snowflakes on the cover were formed at low altitudes and high temperatures. Those on the back cover were formed at high altitudes and low temperatures." Very scarce. OCLC locates the record but no copies; Bibliography of Agriculture vol. 12 no. 5 page 182. Approximately 60 pages are blank. Brownish marbled paper covered boards with tan leather spine. Marbled paper is shelf worn. Spine is chipped at head and base. Arithmetic pencil notes written on the end sheets. A few pages torn out of the ledger in back. Interior content in good condition. About half the pages or less are used for accounts. First page starts with the written heading - "Cash paid out for Company 1863 by S. W. Stinson." Items listed on the first two pages include Horse accessories wagons wagon parts shoes stables oats hay and other horse and wagon related items. Several pages following the 1863 and 1864 records are equations written in pencil. One of these pages has the heading - "Bark Measured for S P Atherton". From the middle sections of the ledger to the end are several products associated with clothing accessories. One page is dated 1865/66. Goods and costs of items include a sewing machine buttons embroidery "infants waist" braid fringe ribbon lace cuffs collars trimmings feather bonnets hats silk etc. Towards the back of the ledger is a short inscription signed by S Stinson Ludlow Vermont. The foundry served as an arsenal of the Confederacy producing ammunition mortar and rifled cannon. Boilers steam engines and armored plate were manufactured beginning in 1862 when the complex was designated as the Confederate States Naval Ironworks.<br /> <br /> From 1877 to 1971 this building housed the Southern Plow Company a subsidiary of Columbus Iron Works. The firm manufactured cast iron goods and agricultural implements including cotton planters harrows cultivators hay presses cane mills and plows.<br /> <br /> Columbus Iron Works is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a National Historic landmark in 1978. Interesting and colorful promotional material for Rock Island Plow Company of Dallas and Oklahoma. A large folding poster printed in red and yellow depicts the two most popular plow models "built especially for Texas soils" on one side of the sheet and on the other a third illustration of a plow with promotional text. A second folding pamphlet comprises a small illustrated catalog with additional models modifications and specifications. The advertisements were sent to the Smith-Moore-Williams Co. of Bonham Texas with a typed letter signed and dated September 1936 exhorting them to post the ads in their store and including a wholesale price list. A stamped return envelope for potential orders is also optimistically included. Very attractive agricultural promotionals though one wonders what the market was for plows in North Texas and Oklahoma at the height of the Dust Bowl. unknown

Some closed tears at fold lines; right margin chipped no text loss; an old mend touches one signature; fair to good.</p> <p>Certificate of election to The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture—the oldest agricultural society in the United States—issued to Henry Simpson as a “Resident Member.†An illustration by J.J. Barralet at the top engraved by William Harrison shows an idyllic farm scene with a farmer stacking hay a plough a harrow and the coat of arms of the society. The plough motif is repeated on the seal at the bottom of the certificate.</p> <p>The document is signed by U.S. District Court Judge Richard Peters 1744–1828 charter member and then-president of The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. Peters was an officer of the Continental Congress and a delegate to the Congress of the Confederation. In 1776 Peters was made secretary of the Board of War; becoming a full member in 1777. Lawyer and abolitionist Roberts Vaux 1786–1836 signs as the society’s secretary.</p> <p>The newly elected member may be Henry Simpson 1790–1868 who wrote The Lives of Eminent Philadelphians now Deceased in 1859.</p> unknown
