These promotional piece informs editors of newspapers on the progress and planned events for the Exposition to be held from September 18 to December 31 1895. <br /> <br /> The Cotton States and International Exposition was a world's fair held in Atlanta Georgia United States in 1895.1 The exposition was designed "to foster trade between southern states and South American nations as well as to show the products and facilities of the region to the rest of the nation and Europe."1 The Cotton States and International Exposition featured exhibits from six states including various innovations in agriculture and technology and exhibits about women and African Americans.1 President Grover Cleveland presided over the opening of the exposition remotely by flipping an electric switch from his house in Massachusetts on September 18 1895.1 The event is best remembered for the "Atlanta Compromise" speech given by Booker T. Inscription reads - "Henry S. Cave Compliments of Saml M. Inman Treasurer Atlanta Ga. June 23 1884." H. S. Cave from Atlanta inscription is written on the verso of the frontispiece. Another owners name in pencil on the front paste down "Augusta Wylie King." A later owner's address mailing label located in the upper left corner front paste down. From the New Georgia Encyclopedia:<br /> <br /> Atlanta held its first exposition named the International Cotton Exposition in Oglethorpe Park in 1881. The city then had fewer than 40000 residents and the primary sense in which the first exposition was “international†was the display of cotton plants from around the world. Nevertheless Atlantans were eager to host the 1881 exposition to promote investment and to help the city toward its goal of becoming an industrial center which was a primary component of Grady’s “New South†concept. Although attendance was lower than expected fewer than 200000 in paid attendance during its two-and-a-half-month run city leaders demonstrated that they could work together to host a major event and that Atlanta was serious about its role in textile production at a time when the North was beginning to grow dissatisfied with the efficiency of southern cotton processing. A quartet of rare agricultural pamphlets published in a series of works by the Imperial Department of Agriculture for the West Indies in the early-20th century each focused on a different aspect of agricultural cultivation in the Leeward Islands St. Lucia and other locations in the West Indies. The pamphlets were issued by the British colonial government in Barbados and likely printed there. Each work includes detailed reports on resources for agricultural cultivation methods and challenges to crop production and other information relative to agriculture on the islands; one of the pamphlets is a promotional work for St. Lucia. The pamphlets are supplemented with tables of information and/or profusely illustrated with photographs picturing various aspects of West Indian agriculture. A photograph of a young man standing in a grape field and holding a drying rack in Fresno 1901. Grape farming in Fresno began in the early 1870s and by the 1880s grapes including raisin grapes were the area’s main crop. Interesting blue print map of this ranch situated along Llagas Creek in Santa Clara County California delineated with fields for various crops such alfalfa vegetables pasture etc. and with the house barn and corrals as well as some of the irrigiation located. Some portions are indicated as being deeded to apparent family members as "Deeded to Lester" and "Deeded to Martin." Ownership of neighboring properties is also given. There are a number of light pencil notations on the map as well some indicating "Sold" as the ranch was evidently divided up around this time. unknown

Includes photographic images of the plows in use on agricultural land in Orange County California. The Post Brothers built what is thought to be the world's largest plow measuring 37 feet long 12 feet high and 11 feed wide with a blade of 86 inches. Built in 1937 it is now on display at the Westminster Historical Society. Quarto: 8 pp. including the wrappers 8 1/4" x 10 5/8". Light edgewear; else very good or better. OCLC locates no holdings. 1912List3215Sterling Pennsylvania: Brown Brothers 1912. Five photographs; four measuring 8 x 10 inches and one 5 x 8 inches. Most with manuscript captions verso. Significant damage to edges; very good. Five photographs depicting Chinese farmworkers in New York around 1912. In the late 19th century many Chinese people facing increasing anti-Chinese hostility left the west coast and came east. Many came to the New York City area which still had its rural parts—especially Queens where many of these photos were taken and which was relatively hard to reach from more urban Manhattan until the completion of several transit projects starting with the Queensboro Bridge in 1909. These would bring in rapid development spelling the end of farming in Queens. Brown Brothers unknown

Two scarce original albumen stereoview photographs of livestock and horse tricks at the 1895 Cotton States & International Exposition which featured the resurgence of the “New South†including the first pavilion sponsored for and by African-Americans the Atlanta Negro Building which covered 25000 square feet and was filled with exhibits of Black workers artists authors and introduced by a Jubilee Singers performances. Unfortunately their accomplishments were largely overshadowed by Booker T. Washington’s notorious “Atlanta Compromise†speech which opened the Fair counseling African-Americans to seek economic security before political or social equality. Benjamin Kilburn 1827-1909. and his brother Edward b. 1830 initially operated their business together until Edward retired in the 1870’s and by 1872 they had a large photographic stereoview card factory one block from the Littleton trains station. Young salesmen carried the stereoviews on the trains and by the early 20th-Century the company was the most extensive producer of stereoview photographs purchasing images from such photographers as William H. Moderate toning and soiling. An unrecorded broadside that prints statistics relating to agricultural production for the region of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba during the late 1830s. For each municipality the broadside prints the number of property owners; ranches; land-grant farms; slaves; white employees; animals including mules donkeys cows and sheep; distances to transport and shipping hubs; and several other figures. In the bottom third of the broadside are printed the census figures from 1836 with the population totaling just over 40000 people and split into Black and white groups. Rather pointedly the figures for the white population are divided by gender while the figures for the Black population are divided by status free or slave. A very interesting statistical snapshot of a smaller rural region in colonial Cuba in 1838. Not in OCLC. unknown
191620860Minneapolis: Thompson Yards Inc 1916. Broadside 20.75 x 9.75 inches. Old folding creases a few short closed tears at margins; very good. Minneapolis-based company Thompson Yards tells farmers that diversification in agriculture is the road to wealth -- urging them to buy silos on credit on the grounds that they can't go wrong if they raise cattle while growing alfalfa and a variety of grain crops. In the 1880s and 1890s the Dakotas had been widely promoted by land agents as ideal for growing wheat and many had settled there convinced their fortunes would be made by the crop. But Dakota farmers had suffered greatly when their wheat crops were devastated by disease "black rust" or excessive heat. While this broadside may read as an advertiser's hype which it is it was not entirely wrong - in the first decades of the twentieth centuries Dakota farmers had success growing oats corn barley rye flax sugar beets sunflowers potatoes and other crops. With demand high from the Allies during the start of World War I such crops did briefly lead to wealth. But farmers also borrowed heavily as they rushed to expand and many could not repay their debts when demand declined after the war and drought conditions returned. Thompson Yards, Inc unknown
