Captain Del Rio's Report occupies pp. 1 to 21 and in the remainder of the work Dr. Cabrera attempts to establish the theory that the figures upon the monuments of Palenque prove a connection between the Egyptians and the Aboriginal race which constructed them.From the occurrence of an eclipse recorded 291 years before Christ corresponding with the same date in the Mexican calendar he constructs a table of the Mexican years." Large folding map on three joined sheets 21 x 1788 cm; 8.25 x 61.75 inches. 11 woodblock illustrations in text and with 2 more not recorded in the index but always present. Original printed wrappers with woodblock vignette. SCARCE Hudson River Railroad travel guide published the first year in which the full line was completed. It covers points of interest along the route with woodblocks illustrating the text. Topics include: the history of the Hudson River the history of the construction of the Hudson River Railroad and the cities towns and villages along the Hudson from New York City all the way to Troy. Concerning the West Point Foundry at Cold Spring the guide states: "the iron foundry was established here by Gouverneur Kemble. The works are situated about a mile west of the village upon a small stream which tumbles rapidly down the mountains affording considerable water power. It is the largest establishment of its kind in the country employing nearly five hundred hands constantly." The building of the Hudson River Railroad is another topic in the guide. The project was considered highly impractical since much of the route had to be cut through extremely difficult rock and terrain. This section includes a description of the tunnels which had to be constructed. The railroad was opened in three stages. In September 1849 it allowed passengers to travel from New York to Peekskill. By that December 6 twenty-three additional miles were opened extending to New Hamburg. By the 31st of the month it was open the remaining distance of nine miles to Poughkeepsie. The Hudson River Railroad was an extension of the Troy and Greenbush Railroad which was chartered in 1845 connecting Troy South to Greenbush now Rensselaer on the east side of the Hudson. The Hudson River Railroad was chartered on May 12 1846 to extend this line south to New York City. The full line opened on October 3 1851 the same year in which this travel guide was published. The first six Annual Reports of the President to the Stockholders of the James River and Kanawha Company for the years of 1835 through 1840. The canal was first developed by the James River Company in 1790 resumed in 1820 by the Commonwealth of Virginia and revived for the second and final time by the James River and Kanawha Company. By the final of these annual reports the canal reached only to Lynchburg and would later be driven out of operation by damage sustained by the Civil War and competition by the C&O railroad. With a large folding map of a proposed canal from Richmond to Tidewater. Foxing to the preliminaries; Japanese tissue reinforcement to the hinges. Half calf over marbled paper with a leather label. San Martin's second and conclusive report on the success of the Battle of Maipu on the 5th of April which won the Chilean stuggle for independence. San Martin and his rebels completely destroyed the Spanish forces led by General Mariano Osorio. The Spaniards were so completely overrun with nearly 3000 prisoners taken and 2000 dead that San Martin soon swept through and liberated Peru. "Despues de mis repetidos avisos del resultado de la batalla del 5 en el llano de Maypú tengo el honor para mayor esclarecimiento de V.E. de incluir los partes originales que he recibido añadiendo que à la fecha pasan de mas de 2500 prisioneros con 170 oficiales. 18871661London 1887. Very good plus. Three printed documents varying sizes 14pp. total. Light wear along folds. Light tanning. One document in a red cloth folding case. An interesting group of three printed documents concerning the Powder River Cattle Company in Wyoming. The manager of the company Morton Frewen was the scion of Anglo-English gentry and came to the Wyoming Territory in 1878 to seek his fortune establishing one of the larger cattle concerns on the Northern Great Plains in what is now northeastern Wyoming with additional holdings in Alberta. In 1882 the company was reorganized as the joint-stock Powder River Cattle Company Ltd. with an English board of directors and investors. Frewen served as manager until 1886 when controversy ensued with charges of false statements of losses due to overstocked pastures and harsh winter. The present group includes Frewen's report to the first annual meeting of the company as well a defense in an 1886 lawsuit between Frewen and the directors of Powder River and an 1887 profit-and-loss statement composed by the company's liquidator. Just about very good. Promotional pamphlet for the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad Company advertising lands for sale in Nebraska. The cover claims "No state offers greater advantages in soil climate rail roads market facilities or grand opportunities to the farmer and stock raiser than Nebraska." The text commences on a high note: "This is the State whose latch string is out and offers homes and promises of prosperity to all who will come." The emphasis is agriculture and stock raising with glowing essays including "Great Grazing District" "Livestock in the State" "Orchards and Groves Planted" "The Pure Air of the Prairies" "The Herd Law - No Fences Allowed" "The Cheapest Lands in America" "Sheep Raising in Nebraska" "Education the Birthright of Every Nebraska Child" etc. OCLC lists two similar items each in a single copy: one at Yale with the imprint of Lincoln: State Journal Co. 1881; and one at the Huntington with the imprint of St. Louis: A. Gast 1881 The present copy has no imprint. A. Zeese & Co. the Chicago engraving firm who is attributed on the first map specialized in half tones zinc etching relief-line lithogravure and photoelectric type. It includes Fort Snelling; Minnehaha Falls; Oak Drive in White Bear Lake; a boat on White Bear Lake; St. Anthony's Falls in Minneapolis; Lake Minnetonka; Wabasha St. Bridge; an Old Brewery in St. Paul; Shanty-ville; Shelter Island New York; Goat Island; plus 3 portraits a bonfire scene and other views of the upper Mississippi River Niagara Falls and St. Paul Minnesota. Boards detached and spine perished; a few leaves loose and laid-in. Skilled work most of it on one side of the leaf therefore removable and suitable for display. <br/><br/>Harley DeWitt Nichols 1859-1939 was born in Barton Wisconsin. He began his education in art as early as 11 years of age. His first job putting his talent and training to use came in the form of an apprenticeship with the Milwaukee firm Marr & Richards where he stayed for 3 years drawing and engraving on wood. The subsequent years included many moves from Milwaukee to Chicago and later to New York where he studied at ASL and was encouraged by Professor Packard to pursue a career as an illustrator at a European school. Nichols left for Munich in October 1885 to attend the Royal Academy where he studied under Heckel became a member of the American Club and socialized with Carl von Marr the clubs president. He went to London for a little while and worked as an illustrator. By 1893 hed returned to New York working mostly in advertising and illustrating for Harpers Weekly and Century magazines. He helped organize the New York Water Color Club. Nichols didnt curb his parapatetic lifestyle until he moved to Laguna Beach California in 1894. The art community in Los Angeles was in its infancy but he got a teaching job at the Echo Mountain summer school and he was inspired by the scenery of Yosemite Monterey San Juan Capistrano and other locations in southern California. He stayed in Laguna Beach until his death in 1939. hardcover books

This is a scarce prospectus for the Company a Wisconsin corporation formed in 1881 with plans to use the water power of the River. The rapids of the St. Louis River near Duluth furnish "one of the greatest of all the available water powers of the world." Indeed "the water power of the Mississippi at its one place of fall is so much less in available power than the fall of the St. Louis River." When fully developed the area around Duluth will be preferable to Chicago for "the great markets of the East." Much material is presented on the opportunities for development of the lumber trade and available natural resources. "The railroad started as a 3 ft 914 mm narrow-gauge line running south from Denver Colorado in 1870. It served mainly as a transcontinental bridge line between Denver and Salt Lake City Utah . The Rio Grande was the epitome of mountain railroading with a motto of 'Through the Rockies not around them' and later 'Main line through the Rockies' both referring to the Rocky Mountains. The D&RGW operated the highest mainline rail line in the United States over the 10240 feet 3120 m Tennessee Pass in Colorado and the famed routes through the Moffat Tunnel and the Royal Gorge. At its height in the mid-1880s the D&RGW had the largest narrow-gauge railroad network in North America with 2783 miles 4479 km of track interconnecting the states of Colorado New Mexico and Utah" Wikipedia.
