Part I includes 210 pages and eighteen chapters which constitute "a survey of events from the earliest times down to the Union of the Crown Colony of British Columbia with the Dominion of Canada." Part II is "a history, mainly political and economic, of the Province since Confederation up to the present time." Part I is preceded and followed by dozens of tissue-protected black and white portraits of individuals influential in the early history of the province, complete with their brief biographies upon the tissue. Part II comprises eighteen chapters over 226 pages plus 5 pages of addenda followed by dozens of tissue protected portraits of "some of the men conspicuous as present day factors in development." Top edge gilt. Gilt lettering upon backstrip. Marbled endpapers. Exceptionally clean, bright, and unmarked with zero wear. Brown suede exterior appears as fresh as the day it was applied over 100 years ago. This majestic fourteen pound tome measures 13" x 10.5" x 4". The Savannah River Site SRS is a nuclear reservation in the United States in the state of South Carolina located on land in Aiken Allendale and Barnwell counties adjacent to the Savannah River 25 miles 40 km southeast of Augusta Georgia. The site was built during the 1950s to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons. The Savannah River National Laboratory SRNL is a multi-program national laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy's DOE Office of Environmental Management. SRNL is located at the Savannah River Site SRS near Jackson South Carolina. It was founded in 1951 as the Savannah River Laboratory. It was certified as a national laboratory on May 7 2004. SRNL research topics include environmental remediation technologies for the hydrogen economy handling of hazardous materials and technologies for prevention of nuclear proliferation. It has specific experience in vitrification of nuclear waste and hydrogen storage initially developed to support production of tritium and plutonium at the Savannah River Site during the Cold War. The Savannah River Site was constructed to produce the basic materials necessary in the fabrication of nuclear weapons primarily tritium and plutonium-239. In support of these efforts the Savannah River Laboratory was created. In August 1950 a top secret letter regarding the scope of work for the site included the directive that "new research and development facilities would be included at the main site or elsewhere to the extent required to support the work. Such facilities will be provided for the solution of process improvement and process development problems which may arise in connection with the work." With this directive the Savannah River Laboratory was created and soon became the second largest research facility for operator E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company. The original Savannah River Laboratory included five main facilities: a main laboratory for process development and experimental research; the Waste Disposal Facility to handle waste created by the laboratory; the Pile Physics laboratory which contained experimental reactors; and CMX and TNX. CMX was established to determine the treatment needed for cooling water in reactor heat exchangers and TNX was used to determine operational information for separations. The laboratory quickly expanded to include a health physics laboratory equipment engineering laboratory and temporary labs such as a fluid pressure bonding laboratory and a mockup of a reactor tank.
