This album records the automobile trip and scenic views along the way of a young Stockton California couple as they traveled past Mount Shasta to the Columbia River Gorge Highway with snapshots interspersed with RPPC’s. Views of the Rotary Club Fountain at Wahkeena Falls along the Columbia River Highway the Cascade Falls and Funicular at Mount Shasta the Bonneville Fish Hatchery as well as Salmon Fish Wheels on the Columbia River and Multnomah Falls are all present. In addition the couple visited the Celilo Falls area before the dams removed their iconic footprint as well as camped and fished on their way to Yellowstone National Park. Several photos show the falls geysers and vistas at Yellowstone along with glimpses of the black bears and buffalo at the Park followed by trip to Salt Lake and on through the California Sierra Nevada mountains to return to Stockton. Jesse Duffy 1895-1977 was a World War I veteran sergent in Company F 263rd Infantry 91st Division discharged in 1919 worked for Holt Manufacturing in Stockton the City Engineering Dept. during the 1920’s and later for Fibreboards Products Co. in Stockton. Ruth Duffy 1895-1974 was a longtime seamstress and tailor. Eddy 1889-1970 was a longtime Oregon City photographer who first launched his career at 70th & Sandy in Portland as photographer and later operated a postcard stand at Wahkeena Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. Pebbled textured black cloth silver lettering stamped on front cover minor edgewear soiling to rear pastedown minor soiling to final image still a VG- exemplar. This souvenir album opens with beautiful sunset shot across the Columbia River followed by a photo of a young woman standing in front of well-appointed home with Hops growing along the porch. These are followed by photos capturing shipping along the Columbia River with the British sailing yacht Samantha out of Liverpool tied up to the Bailey Gatzert sternwheeler; the sternwheeler Kehani which operated from Portland originally launched in 1890 and was rebuilt and renamed Ottawa in 1905; a nice front view of the passenger sternwheeler Regulator built originally in 1891 by Louis Paget for The Dalles Portland & Astoria Naviagation Co. known as the Regulator Line operating steamer service from The Dalles to the Lower Columbia River past Kalama. Other photos depict a stately Victorian hotel on pilings near the shipping channel; a shipwreck of a 3-masted schooner on its’ side buried in the sand; and Cape Horn along the River prior to construction of the rail line. The final photo captures the waterfront of Astoria in 1898 with warehouses and canneries on pilings and houses above on the bluffs. Lovell 1883-1976 moved from Illinois to Washington following the death of his father William Lovell with his mother Susan Lovell and brothers Charles & Harry Lovell who homesteaded near La Conner WA after first settling in Bay View WA in late 1898. The trip must have been prior to July 12 1898 as the Regulator sternwheeler depicted in one of the photos wrecked at the Cascade Locks July 12 1898 was salvaged and rebuilt with a larger and heavier hull launching Feb. 1899. VERY RARE SET ! . . . AN EARLY COLLECTION OF SEPIA-TONED ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS . . . SHOWING THE CHIANG-JIANG YANGTSE RIVER & ENVIRONS . . This is a lovely early collection of genuine and original photographs of the Yangtze River and the gorges. . The English speaking foreigner who took these photographs put titles and captions on many. It begins with a voyage up the Yangtze River with the first date on December 16 1900 and continuing photographs through December 19 23-25th. . Each photo is mounted on a card likely extracted from an old photo album some cards have two images one on each side. . Captions are: 1. 2 Photos: "December 16th S.S. Kiang Ho arrived at Ichang arrived Ichang December 19th." and the verso: "H.M.S. Kinsha at Ichang." The 2nd image looks like a postcard or something other than a matching glossy photo the size is 14 x 8 cm. with hand written caption. . 2. 2 Photo views of "Shin Tan" anchorage & rapids . 3. 2 Photos: "December 24th Tung Ding Gorge" & "Christmas Day" 1900 "Shin Tan rapids." . 4. 1 Photo: "UP THE YANGTSE' . 5. 2 Photos: "THE FIRST GORGE" with '664' hand written on the negative. And verso blank no caption shows rocky mountain shore line. . 6. 2 Photos: "December 23rd the Padunzai Rapid" shows several junks & boats at anchorage with people looking on. Ranging from largest: 25.2 x 20.8 cm. smallest: 19.3 x 26.4 cm. . Color photos are posted to our website. . CONDITION: These are original glossy photographs each gently laid down some edges not fastened firmly a couple of loose or folds on edges. All clean vivid good focus no obvious fading a couple of the usual and typical less than perfect 'development' spots. By and large an excellent group of photographs developed most likely in China a souvenir of a foreign person's trip 1900down the river. Far and above the average photograph quality of this early period. . RARITY: Original early dated photos of the Yangtze river are RARE and seldom found during this period. Even rarer are photographs with captions and dates. Nicely done fascinating work. . . unknown

It does not have all the 27 folding plates and maps compared to the 1845 copy currently held by the Cincinnati Public Library their copy states "Part 2". Does not appear maps or plans were removed at the back. Possible that this copy is incomplete but difficult to verify if the 34 page text came with 21 drawings or 27 drawings initially. n.p. unknown
