An early Junk bond with an attractive bank-note engraving of the Hudson Highlands - a fictitious Garrison's Landing looking west across the Hudson towards the plains of West Point; with an eagle on the verso. Issued at 4 percent dated 13 Oct. 1892. It is signed by Chauncey Depew 1834 - 1928 whose ancestors settled in 1685 at the present location of Peekskill NY. Among many other positions Depew was president of the New York Central Railroad System and president of the West Shore Railroad Company. This line extended from Weehawken NJ north along the west shore of the Hudson River to Albany NY and then west to Buffalo; it is no longer a passenger line & now serves as CSX Transportation's main freight route from the west to the New York City area. First edition thus of this early stereoview image of fisherman setting in his boat with the Columbia River sweeping alongside and in the background. The Continent Stereoscopic Company was noted for issuing pirated and copy negatives of stereoviews with a view original images mixed in from 1870-1890. The “borrowed†images from C.R. Savage F. Two silver gelatin photos sized 6 x 8.25 in. mounted on dark gray studio boards sized 9.75 x 12 in. minor creasing & wear to couple corners edgewear still VG sharp images with strong contrast and pencil annotation on verso of one stating “Willamette†River. These two images document the era of speedy motor gasoline launches on the Willamette River in the Pacific Northwest at the beginning of the 20th century. Although steam yachts were the first recreational power boats their scale and expense restricted them only to the wealthy where as gasoline engine power boating was much more accessible. The Augusta gasoline motor launch depicted in these two photos was designed for speed with significant wake behind the craft setting low in the water clean lines large open area for seating engine and instruments flying flags a bow and stern. n.p., hardcover

Original printed yellow wrappers 31 1 pp. illustrated from two full-page pictorial plates three maps on verso of front cover and recto and verso of rear cover. Front map is of the great South Platte region. Map on inside rear cover is a map of Southern Iowa showing lands of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company that are available for sale Map on outside of rear cover is a map showing the leading through routes to the West and the land grants in Iowa & Nebraska of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy R. R. and Burlington & Missouri River Railroad in Nebraska. A scarce and interesting promotional for the sale of 1000000 acres of land owned along the routes of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. The Burlington and Missouri put out some of the most interesting and compelling railroad land promotionals in the genre nicely illustrated with maps and plates and this example is no exception. The maps show the lands for sale along the line of the railroad from Monroe Iowa to Omaha; lands in Nebraska from Omaha to Kearney along the South Platte; and a map showing railroad routes from Chicago. The plates are entitled "Looking Southwest from Lincoln Neb." and "Valley of the Big Blue South of Seward Neb." The text is devoted to detailed descriptions of the land including natural resources soil climate stock raising and homesteading opportunities and prices for land and for goods. This publication enjoyed some success; another promotional issued the next year advertised only 750000 acres of land left for sale indicating that the Burlington and Missouri had sold off a quarter million acres of land the previous year. Laid into this copy is a four-page "Circular of Rates on Tickets and Freight" for several railroads including the Burlington & Missouri. Not in Railway Economics nor in the Eberstadt or Decker catalogues. OCLC locates three copies at the American Antiquarian Society Harvard Business School Library and the DeGolyer Library. There is also a copy at Yale. This scarce promotional booklet has covers lightly soiled small chips to the covers covers holding but loose internally quite serviceable. Overall a very good copy. A. The Hudson River steamers are included in the section "Eastern River Boats" with information including: general description mechanical structure masts & guys hull frame engines condenser walking beam boilers paddle wheels and management and appliances for the economical navigation "everything is managed from the wheel-house" p119.<br /> <br /> With three large folding plates titled "Eastern River Boat "Commonwealth" plates 9 10 & 11 and three large folding plates "Western River Boat "Memphis" plates 12 13 & 14.<br /> <br /> This volume contains 22 engraved plates plate 5 missing but never present likely the H. M. iron clad ship 'Warrior'. The second volume of a series still in print in 1992 which includes an article by Norman S. Three mounted albumen photographs sized 6.75 x 4.25 in. mounted on dark maroon-coloured studio board w/ photographer’s imprint at lower right corner minor edgewear rubbing slight dustsoiling still nice images w/ good contrast. Three striking images of a bustling Port of Portland Oregon on the Willamette River depicting United States Navy warships sternwheelers barges 3-masted barks and others. The first depicts a Newark-Class Protected Cruiser most likely the USS Baltimore C-3 which was launched and commissioned in 1888 and joined the Pacific Squadron where she served until cruising the West Coast of the United States until October 1892 when she returned to the Atlantic to take part in the Naval maneuvers for the 1893 Columbian Exposition. The second shows the stern of a Yorktown-class gunboat possibly the USS Yorktown PG-1 who sailed with the USS Baltimore in Chile and later took part in sealing patrols from 1892-1898 off of Alaskan waters with the Royal Navy. Wiester 1858-1941 not to be confused with contemporary George M. Weister 1862-1922 who also began his photographic career with the Partridge Photo Company of Portland OR around 1890 and by 1892 had taken over the operation with his own imprint while Weister had launched the Weister Company selling photographs photographic supplies cameras and lantern slides. Charles Wiester worked only for a short time as a photographer as by 1900 he was working as a railroad agent and moved subsequently to Spokane WA by 1910. C.E. Wiester, E.J.
