"Slam" Marshall fu un veterano della prima guerra mondiale e uno storico delle operazioni durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Nel 1947 fece sussultare il mondo militare e civile annunciando che, in una compagnia di fanteria media, non più di un soldato su quattro sparava effettivamente mentre entrava in contatto con il nemico. Le sue considerazioni si basavano su interviste condotte immediatamente dopo i combattimenti durante il secondo conflitto, sia in Europa che nelle zone di guerra del Pacifico. Per rimediare a questo squilibrio, Marshall propose modifiche all'addestramento di fanteria per garantire che i soldati americani nelle guerre future riuscissero a sparare di più sul nemico.
