Zimmer p588, Wood p566: "The information in this excellent work is derived chiefly from a collection of nearly a thousand skins of birds". The author travelled extensively in the Nile area and was able to observe the birds first-hand. Some of the birds are illustrated here for the first time.

Sclater was the author of many ornithology books, most famous of which is Argentine Ornithology he wrote with W. H. Hudson. Sclater added footnotes and an appendix to this version. This was the 41st publication of the Ray Society. "The edition may have been 600" - Curle p 76.
