Original dust jacket some general wear chipped to top of the spine and dust soiling now protected in a removable sleeve. Green cloth boards gilt to the spine and vignette to front board very good. Contents clean and tight original endpapers unmarked the bookplate of Eric Hosking to the front pastedown no foxing. A very good internally very clean copy with an interesting provenance and rare with a jacket. Eric Hosking OBE Hon FRPS FBIPP 1909-1991 was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" Gemma Padley. He was pioneering and developed new techniques especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird" 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1800 species and his pictures have appeared in some 1000 books including the popular New Naturalist series of which he was photographic editor. 1963023173Aachen: Hans Limberg 1963. Second edition a complete set published between 1963 and 1977. In the original 40 paperback parts. Originally owned by the ornithologist and author Colin Harrison with his signature on many of the parts. With 19 colour plates and many small text illustrations octavo 1047 pages a very good set with two red binding cases which are just slightly worn. The second volume seems to be quite scarce. The work deals with cage and aviary birds paying particular attention to finches and contains much useful background detail regarding their wild habits and habitats. A heavy set - extra postage may be necesary. Originally owned by the British ornithologist and author Colin Harrison. He became a professional ornithologist at the age of 34 and became responsible for the care of the national collection of birds' nests and eggs in the Bird Room at the Natural History Museum at Tring Hertfordshire. In 1966 he led the fourth of the series of Harold Hall Australian ornithological collecting expeditions. Harrison later became interested in biogeography and the museum's avian paleontological collection on which he published a number of articles with Cyril Walker. He studied and published on different aspects of bird behaviour on plumage patterns and on the bone structure of modern and fossil birds. He identified Eostrix vincenti in 1980. His more popular publications include "Atlas of the Birds of the Western Palearctic" Collins 1982; "History of the Birds of Britain Collins 1988 and "A Field Guide to the Nests Eggs and Nestlings of British and European Birds Quadrangle 1975.
