1904039211Edinburgh: David Douglas 1904. Book. Good. Hardcover. Royal 8vo. A fascinating association copy belonging to Mary Russell the Duchess of Bedford signed "M. Bedford" with "S. Y. Sapphire" written below to the front paste-down. The half-title page is signed by James Fisher and at the foot of the page in his hand "This is the late Duchess of Bedford's annotated copy". There appear to be only a few annotations by the Duchess and several further notes by Fisher. The S. Y. Sapphire was a private yacht with a crew of 49 and was extensively used by Mary Russell for bird-watching. She was also a pioneering British aviator. She spent decades studying bird migration and ecology particularly sea-birds like fulmars and petrels and extensively observed and collected birds on remote islands like Fair Isle.
