The 254 chromolithographic plates are all very good and with the original tissue guards a few marked; half-title & title pages. Original two-tone green cloth binding with gilt lettering very good with a little general wear and rubbing only. Contents clean and tight inscription in ink to the top of the half title dated 1904 original end-papers toned and a little brittle around the edges slight spotting to title page and the odd page edge some rusting to staples running down the spine of the first few gathers plates clean. A very good copy. The plates used in different editions of this work are not standard and vary in quality this particular edition includes plates printed to a high standard and importantly the eggs are illustrated with shadows giving a particularly 3-dimensional look: they are in our opinion superior to some earlier editions. Contents clean and tight prize plate dated 1908 signed by the head of the time on the front pastedown ornate marbled endpapers gilt dentelles hinges good and strong light foxing to a few tissue guards and text pages all plates uneffected and clean. Volumes 1-3 1897-98 complete: Volume I Jan.-June 1897 224 pp. continuously paginated with index; Volume II July-Dec. 1897 240 pp. continuously paginated; Volume III Jan.-June 1898 240 pp. continuously paginated with index. Each issue contains 8 or 9 gorgeous full color plates; also retained here are the full color covers of Vol. I Nos. 1 and 2 unknown whether succeeding issues continued with color covers thus approx. 150 plates total all essentially as issued some with small library stamp on verso only. Text block is clean and otherwise unmarked. This title appears to have ceased publication at the conclusion of Vol. IV so this offering comprises 75% of the total run. The binding has a gilt bird on a branch to the front board and gilt titles to spine. All edges gilted. The binding is bright and clean with light wear to corners. There is the beginning of a split at the front spine joint but the book is sound. Original yellow endpapers present. Contents with frontispiece and guard; title; contents and plate list; text 216pp with 23 guarded plates. Internally in very good clean condition with the occasional light mark or spot. Four volumes octavo illustrated with 192 colour plates some intermittent foxing internally but nowhere too offensive pages slightly age-toned each front endpaper has a name neatly cut from the upper corner and all endpapers have slight sellotape residue markings; red cloth in very good condition with extremely bright gilt lettering on the spines the dustwrappers are slightly worn and chipped but not price-clipped and each with the publisher's price sticker of 18/-. They are now protected in a removable clear cover. Volume I - the fore-edge is slightly marked. Volume II - a small marginal tear to page viii and a slight mark to the inner margin of page 116. Volume III - slightly more foxing than the other volumes. Volume IV -a slightly open hinge at pages 96/97. Overall a quite attractive set. New Edition. Cloth. Good/Slightly worn and frayed.
