He was pioneering and developed new techniques especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird" 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1800 species and his pictures have appeared in some 1000 books including the popular New Naturalist series of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist. Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc. Hardcover

Pipits and Wagtails is the first comprehensive one-volume guide to the twenty-six species and all subspecies that occur in the vast swath of Europe Asia and North America known as the Holarctic. These birds are a notoriously difficult group to differentiate and so the authors--the world's two leading authorities in this field--have gone to exhaustive lengths to ensure that no aspect of identification has been omitted. Twenty-six full color plates and some part plates depict all the species and distinct subspecies in different plumages. To help further with identification the book includes nearly 250 color photographs numerous line drawings and color distribution maps for each species. The detailed species accounts cover all aspects of identification: taxonomy size and structure plumage geographical variation anatomical measurements molt and aging sexing voice behavior distribution and habitat. They also include sonograms of the species' unique songs and calls. Great care has been taken to accurately illustrate and describe plumage differences between all valid subspecies as well as differences relating to sex and aging. 1853033269
London : Reeve and Co 1853 A good copy of the 2nd edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates. Popular British Ornithology was part of Reeve's Popular Natural History series which was produced to give young students a proper grounding in natural history subjects. The binding is sound and clean. The spine is faded with light pulling to the ends. Boards have some mottling to the cloth but the gilt decoration on the front board is bright. There are a couple of small dents in the side edge of the back board and 2 slightly darker scuffs on the front board. There is some splitting at the front endpaper joint but the book is sound. Contents are in very good clean condition with light toning and occasional spotting to page edges. The plate list is slightly confusing because the frontispiece is not numbered and plate 14 is placed earlier than it should be.
Reeve and Co hardcover
