160 pages including index. Small amount of writing on half title page. Average wear to covers and page corners. A bird book like no other. Concentrating on behaviour rather than species identification, the book delves into why birds act the way they do. It will raise the pleasure of birding to new heights. Starting with scenes as common as a swampy rookery of blue herons or the antics of a nesting nuthatch, the author adds new meaning to the everyday experiences of birders around the world. Learn that: blue herons live in colonies so that members can follow the colony's most successful hunters on forays rather than risk failure on solo expeditions.; female tree swallows commit mass murder against neighbouring offspring and females during nesting season; songbirds adjust their music to suit the eacoustical characteristics of the surrounding terrain, and much more. 1815033188
Bungay: Printed and published by Brightly & Childs. Published also by T Kinnersley 1815 A good 2 volume set in new half calf and marbled board bindings with 148 of 152 hand-coloured plates. This work is extremely rare and as is usual with the Bungay publications the paper quality is poor tending to attract dirt and staining. The collation of this work is generally haphazard and the plates are not numbered. The bindings are in fine condition with leather title labels and gilt lines to spines. Contents: Vol I: title; introduction i - xxxv; text pp 1-586 with 67 of 71 plates. Vol II: title dated 1820; text pp 1-700 with 81 plates Finis. The paper in both volumes is toned to varying degrees with some areas of offsetting marking or staining. Some page corners have been turned over. There is the occasional side edge tear and there is professional paper repair to the title page of Vol I and initial pages where there has been some worming. There is slight worming in the margin of xiii-xvi. The plates in these volumes are cleaner with better and more detailed colouring than usual and the plate paper is in better condition than the text paper. The plate of the Spoonbill in Vol II has some black ink splots on it - as does the opposing text page no 333. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images to better assess condition.
Printed and published by Brightly & Childs. Published also by T Kinnersley hardcover

1794033347
London : Printed for the Author and for F and C Rivington 1794 A complete set of Donovan's British Birds with 244 hand coloured plates. In contemporary half morocco leather bindings with marbled paper sides with the 10 volumes bound in 5. A mixed edition - with Vol III having a 'New Edition' title page dated 1815 and Vol V with a title dated 1820. The other 8 volumes have first issue titles. The bindings have highly decorative spines with 6 gilt compartments 4 with a gilt bird in the middle one with titles and one with volume numbers. The leather has occasional scuffing and surface loss particularly on the corners. There is rubbing to the spine joints and the first 2 volumes have closed splits at the joints extending 2 compartments down from the top. The marbled paper is quite scuffed on the surface and edges. Internally the endpapers have the same marbling. All the volumes have initial blanks; some have final blanks. Unusually the plates have thick slightly waxy paper guards instead of the normal tissue paper. These do not enhance the appearance of the volumes but they have protected the plates well and the colours are vibrant. The contents are not sewn in and a couple of plates and some guards are loose. Overall the text paper tends to be toned and with occasional spotting and browning around the edges - particularly the top edge. The plate paper is slightly toned but fox spots are rare. There is some offsetting to the guard paper. Contents tightly bound. Contents: Vol I/II - I - title 1794 with ink gift inscription at the top; text paginated for a few pages only; plates 1-29 with text.
