1942053688New York: National Audubon Society 1942. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quarto. xi 111 pages indexed. Soft cover bound in tan wrappers. Moderate wear to the binding. The spine is a bit toned as is the rear cover and there are some finger smudges on the front cover. the text is clean. Illustrated with some drawings and a few photos and a color frontis. Includes maps of some of the locations of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker sightings. One of the rarest and most sought-after birds in America. Some assume the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker to be extinct while others consider it highly endangered. The few sightings in recent decades are all open to debate and some controversy. The possible or near extinction of this largest of the woodpeckers is largely due to the destruction of its natural habitat through logging as well as over-hunting for trophies. The last universally confirmed sighting in the U.S. was in 1944 in the Singer Tract in northeastern Louisiana. Other more recent sightings have elicited excitement but have failed to achieve universal acceptance.

National Audubon Society paperback
