Booklet: 2 p.l. 5-108 1 pp. Plus 2 folio-sized leaves listing the title publisher and contents. <br/> The leaves uniformly matted; text in original paper wrappers housed in a pocket in the inside upper cover and leaves contained in the original folding rough-textured linen case printed paper label on front cover and spine. With a full color double-page facsimile housed in a printed paper bifolium noting that it was "put together for Konrad Graf Reuttner Schloss Achstetten" and ILLUSTRATED WITH ZOOLOGICAL LEAVES FROM 60 DIFFERENT BOOKS as called for including woodcuts and engravings of all manner of animals including two incunabular leaves and 28 WITH CONTEMPORANEOUS HAND COLORING plus an additional matted engraving not called for. ◆Some foxing to the case though the cloth bright and showing almost no wear as is the case with commentary volume; mostly light browning dampstaining or foxing on perhaps a dozen leaves one leaf the 1598 Gessner "Fischbuch" with noticeable repairs one folder torn at bottom corner but in excellent condition as a whole and with the majority of the leaves in fine or nearly fine condition.<br/> <br/> There are 60 leaves here showing woodcuts engravings and lithographs of a wide range of species from the animal kingdom--wild domestic and imaginary. The majority of these leaves come from the 18th and early 19th centuries but there are two incunabular leaves and 14 leaves from the 16th and 17th centuries. The two incunabular leaves both in fine condition are the "Ortus Sanitatis" Mainz Jacob Meydenbach 1491 and the same work printed by Johann Pruß in Strassburg ca. 1497-99. Works represented include Pliny Gessner's illustrations of fish and fowl Audubon's "Birds of America" and Meyer's "British Birds" among other notable titles. Felinophiles take note: whoever compiled the specimen leaves for the present copy included an inordinate number of illustrations of cats. Publisher's original pink coated-paper boards with titles and volume numbers in gilt to the spines. Page edges untrimmed. Housed in a later pink handmade paper-covered card slipcase. Illustrated with 107 hand-coloured engraved plates including a frontispiece depicting visitors to the Menagerie to the first volume. A near fine set the bindings firm with light rubbing to the boards sunning to the spines and some wear to the extremities. The contents with a corner missing to the front free endpaper of volume two appears to be an original paper flaw and some occasional light foxing are otherwise in excellent order and clean throughout. The plates remain bright and fresh. A superb set. A most attractive embodiment of the early nineteenth-century endeavour to transform royal and imperial ménageries displays of power and authority into the first zoological gardens. This formative period for the modern zoo was partly linked to the ongoing development of scientific zoological study but was also as is so wonderfully demonstrated by the present set an attempt to educate and entertain the general population democratising a formally exclusive arena of knowledge and spectacle. This work was first published in 1812 under Napoleon's reign as Emperor and was thus titled "La Ménagerie Impériale". Following his abdication in 1814 and his succession by King Louis XVIII the publisher Saintin was prompted to reissue the same book with identical text and illustrations and in the same exact format but under the new title "La Ménagerie Royale". He even recycled the pages from the previous edition in the binding of this one as revealed by the somewhat see-through endpapers. A rare and entirely original set of a charming French popular natural history especially desirable with contemporary colouring. Not listed in Copac nor at the Bibliothèque nationale de France OCLC only lists three copies of the "Impériale" edition. Huzard 4010. Provenance: pencil ownership inscriptions of Euphémie and Esther Courtois to versos of front free endpapers one dated "38" possibly pointing to a contemporary family living near Guiscard in the Oise department north of Paris. In 1915 Valliant died without completing the work. The final unfinished part not offered here was then issued separately along with the final 3 plain lithographic plates. This work documents the exotic tropical fish of coastal and inland southern Mexico and Central America. This work is fourth volume of a 13-volume work of the "Mission Scientifique au Mexique et dans l'Amérique Centrale" which was the French competitor to the British "Biologia Centrali-Americana" which also documented the plant and animal life of Central America. This monograph is based primarily on 14 months of fieldwork from 1921-1922 in the Riu Kiu islands also known as the Loo Cho islands that stretch between the Japanese island chain and Formosa now Taiwan. Zoogeographically the islands span the Palaearctic region Japan and the Oriental region Taiwan; Kuroda thought this was one of the most interesting ornithological regions of the world from a zoogeographic point of view. The monograph describes 281 species and subspecies based on 1621 skins collected in 1921-22 and reviews all other specimens in museums in around the world. These fine color plates are printed on glossy clay-coated paper which provides excellent color reproduction. This is the only reprint published of this important work. There is one copy of the first edition of this work being offered online for $140000. Thus this reprint is a bargain by comparison. 1916177822Bombay: Bombay Natural History Society 1916. First edition first printing of this early pamphlet on the fauna of Iraq written for soldiers active in the Middle Eastern theatre of the First World War. We have traced only three copies in UK institutions and three in France. Norman Boyd Kinnear 1882-1957 was a zoologist and ornithologist who became curator of the museum of the Bombay Natural History Society in 1907. This society was dedicated to collecting specimens of animals from across the Indian subcontinent and beyond. For example in 1911 they organized a survey of mammals in India that amassed over 50000 specimens and Kinnear was tasked with cataloguing and dispatching this collection to the British Museum. Kinnear produced this present pamphlet in 1916. "During World War I large collections of birds mammals reptiles and insects were shipped to the Society by its members. Kinnear was then associated with the Brigade Headquarters Bombay as Intelligence Officer. In spite of the new responsibilities on him he succeeded in preparing and presenting a pamphlet on the 'Animals of Mesopotamia' which was circulated among the officers and men serving with the Expeditionary Force. It became a frequent book of reference and proved a great help for those who were collecting specimens" Bombay Natural History Society pp. 24-25. Soldiers and officers alike used the guide to collect a reported 259 mammal species. Provenance: Francis E. W. Venning with his inscription to the front wrapper and notes to the margins. Venning served in the Indian army until 1933 rising to the position of Brigade Commander of the Peshawar brigade on the north west frontier. He was also an ornithologist and zoologist after whom the species of snake Hebius venningi was named. The Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society Volume 27 records that he collected specimens from Hamar Lake and the Euphrates and next to the entry for Corvus monedula collaris in this copy there is a note saying there were "large flocks of rooks in December about Hamar Lake" p. 9. The notes also mention Kut Al Amara and Sheikh Sa'ad major battles in the region in the First World War. Octavo. Original light blue paper wrappers wire-stitched as issued front wrapper lettered in black rear wrapper stamped with printer's vignette in black. Leather with minor stains and losses isolated spots of foxing but in most ways a beautiful copy--the spine ends and joints unworn and the text extraordinarily fresh and with virtually no signs of use.<br/> <br/> This is a really excellent contemporary copy of an early edition of a French translation of the first attempt at a rigorous analysis of animal behavior. Hermann Samuel Reimarus 1694-1768 is largely remembered for his contributions to Deist philosophy but his wide-ranging research interests included mathematics philology and economics as well as natural history as evidenced in the present work initially published in German in 1760. Reimar argues in the text here for instinct as a driving factor in animals' actions rather than a response to bodily necessities or taught behavior. Our French translation by journalist and natural historian Jacques Réneaume de Latache 1725-96 features additional notes and commentary concerning Latache's own observations of animals. These include such charming details as the romance of butterflies and the work ethic of beavers. Our copy is from the library of Jean-Louis Masbou 1770-1836 an important player in Geneva politics in the early 19th century. Masbou held several government posts between 1814 and 1832 including serving as one of the four mayors or syndics six times during the period between 1821-32. This bookplate was evidently produced during one of these mayorships as it refers to the syndic office. This work provides a natural history of the fishes and amphibians inhabiting the southern provinces of France. Jean Marius Francois Reguis 1850-1908 studied pharmacy at the School of Medicine in Marseille where he studied under Charles Lespes Antoine-Fortune Marion Alphonse Derbs and Edouard Marie Heckel. After finishing his education he moved to Meyrargues in southwest France to begin his studies on the batrachians reptiles birds mammals anthropology invertebrates botany and geology of the area. He later joined the Faculty of Sciences at Marseille when he began writing a 16 volume encyclopedia on the natural history of southern France. Between 1876 and 1904 he published numerous monographs and journal articles on these topics but they were never formally organized into his encyclopedia. This book appears to be one of the volumes in Regius' proposed encyclopedia. This volume has long tables of the species Regius described in the volume. Due to the extreme scarcity of the work this volume was likely published in an edition of 500 copies or less. All of his published works are very hard to find. Regius died in 1908 after a lifetime of studying zoology mycology and botany of southern France. This volume is warmly inscribed by the author to F. Letarte of Paris dated July 30 1882.
