Early reprint edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. viii 182 pages of text followed by ii publisher's advertisement. Contemporary full calf boards expertly rebacked in leather with a gilt-stamped leather spine label. Illustrated with a frontisportrait of Cocker. The endpapers were replaced using old paper with the engraved bookplate re-attached to the inside front cover: Marquis Townshend. The rear inside pastedown has the name of an 18th Century owner Edward Keene which is also inked on the front board and dated 1792. The first and final several pages are browned along the edges the frontisportrait is soiled with a tiny hole in the margin there is soiling to the closed page edges and a few tiny tears to the margins of a few pages. A worn but well-restored 18th Century edition of this important work this being stated as the 56th edition carefully corrected and amended. Printed for J. Fuller, Rivington, W. Johnston, R. A scarce early edition of the monumentally popular mathematics textbook by Edward Cocker illustrated with a portrait frontispiece. A scarce work the fourteenth edition of this oft-reprinted work.ESTC citation number T30868.Illustrated with a frontispiece.One leaf of adverts to the rear.Collated complete.Edward Cocker's popular educational volume on mathematics an important work which was used to teach maths in British schools for more than 150 years.Published posthumously there has been arguments that Cocker was not the author and that the work was by the editor John Hawkins using Cocker's name to gain more respect for the work. Rebound in a modern cloth binding with new endpapers. Externally smart. Only a few very light marks to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with some light spots. Frontispiece is reinforced to the reverse. Small chip to page 85/86. A few leaves are a little closely trimmed to the bottom edge no loss of text. Worming to the head of pages 59 to 202 worm hole a little heavier to pages 101 to 192 affecting only a very marginal amount of text. Prior owner's ink inscription to page 215. Repair to the advert to the rear with loss of text. Small tide mark to the margin of the last few pages. Good Eben. Tracy hardcover
1745032735<p>Lomdon: R Ware C Hitch J Hodges 1745 A very good copy in largely contemporary full leather binding with frontispiece portrait of Edward Cocker. This copy is the revised edition 'carefully corrected and amended' by George Fisher in 1677. The binding has contemporary boards with a newer spine with gilt lines and title label. There is some scuffing and wear to the boards. Internally there is a pencil note to the front pastedown endpaper and a loose note at the rear by William Ridler a bookseller in London circa 1877 - 1904. Contents: advert with portrait to verso; title; to the Reader verso of title; Edward Cocker's Proem 2pp; note to the Reader 1677; table of contents; text pp 1-183 with advert at the rear. There is some mispagination: pp 69-71-70; and 160-163-162-163 - both with continuous text. At the end some of the pages are out of order with the wrong page printed to the verso of a couple of leaves. The page order for continous text is: 182-181-183-un-numbered verso of 182. Early ownership signature of "Richd. Harding" at the top of B1. First published in 1704 only three editions of this dictionary were ever produced. "The authorship of this work is suspect since Cocker died in 1676 and Hawkins in 1692 but Hawkins was also responsible for publishing Cocker's Arithmetic 1678 and his Decimal Arithmetic 1685. H.B. Wheatley "Who Was Cocker" The Bibliography VI 1884 25-30 regarded the Dictionary as a bookseller's fraud. Heal has suggested that the work may be the product of Edward Cocker junior. Cocker's dictionary has sections devoted to proper names based like other similar lists on Charles Estienne's Dictionarium historicum Paris 1553 "An explanation of terms used in the art of war" based on Guillet de Saint George's Les Arts de l'homme d'epee which was translated into English in 1705 as The Gentleman's Dictionary and "An alphabetical explanation of the most difficult terms used in trade and merchandize" based on Edward Hatton's The Merchants magazine 1697" Alston.
