Finely bound by Brentano's in three-quarter contemporary-style dark blue morocco ruled in gilt and light blue cloth five raised bands to spine stamped in gilt to spine pale gray endpapers top edges gilt. A very good set spines faded to brown and with some light rubbing to hinges cloth rippling to front board of volume I a touch of offsetting to endpapers. Widely acknowledged as being essential to the understanding of Charles Lamb's writings the author's letters to other literary figures of his time shed light on his own work and Romantic literature. Written between 1796 and 1826 the recipients of the letters include Samuel Taylor Coleridge Robert Southey and William Wordsworth. Interestingly when his letters were first published they were heavily edited because many of them referred to the ongoing mental health struggles that his sister Mary also an author was experiencing. Tales from Shakespeare is a collection of fourteen of Shakespeare's comedies and six of his tragedies retold in prose format with the intention of simplifying the stories to be understood by children. The book includes works like "The Tempest" "Othello" "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "As You Like It" among others. Originally published as a second volume to Essays of Elia Lamb's Last Essays of Elia contains more short essays inspired by his own life. Like his first book of essays this collection was commended for its conversational familiar tone and helped to solidify Lamb's place in literature. This volume also contains Mrs. Leicester's School a collection of short pieces in autobiographical style from the point of view of young girls telling stories about their daily lives. About near fine with toning and light rubbing to extremities interior very clean. Elia is a collection of Lamb's popular essays each of which was originally published in London Magazine. Specifically it includes "The South-Sea House" "Christ's Hospital Five and Thirty Years Ago" "Dream-Children; A Reverie" and "Modern Gallantry" among others. Lamb a long-time clerk for the British East India Company began writing essays under the pseudonym "Elia" which he derived from a former colleague's surname. Lamb wrote in a colloquial and conversational style that made his essays beloved by his Edwardian and Victorian readers. Additionally Lamb included many of his friends and family in his writing loosely disguised by initials and pseudonyms. 1809004776Dublin: Wilkinson & Courtney 1809. Roger Lamb 1756-1830 a British soldier provided one of the more important eye-witness accounts of the American Revolution. This is an attractive Near Fine copy of an unknown facsimile edition. Nicely bound in full leather with decorative gilt stamping three raised bands on the spine marbled endpapers with all page ends in gilt. There is no modern publisher or date but the book has been reprinted by several publishers including Arno/NY Times and Ayer Company as well as the print-on-demand sources. Clean fresh text; xxiv 438 pages. Mild rubbing to corners and foot of the spine. The spine and top edge have faded a bit. Whatever this is it is a nice addition. Facsimile Edition. Full-Leather. With handsome marbled edges and endpapers. Trent College motif gold-stamped to the upper board and with the remnants of their library plate to the front pastedown. The calf lightly marked in one or two places with a touch of rubbing to the corner tips and a little wear and splitting to the extremities of the outer hinges. A touch of very light spotting and soiling to a dozen preliminary leaves. A very good copy of this series of prose summaries of twenty Shakespeare plays Charles Lamb mostly contributing the tragedies whilst his sister focuses on the comedies splendidly enhanced with a dozen beautifully reproduced artworks inspired by the plays each pasted to considerably thicker paperstock.
