A few smudge marks to text pages later ownership inscription written in ink on title page. Contains an engraved frontispiece portrait with tissue guard and six folded facsimile letters light offsetting to text. Handwritten letter by the author to Col. Lamb attached to front flyleaf. In addition to commenting on the book Washburne writes: ".I shall always guard the most agreeable souvenirs of my visit to the Old Dominion and of the many marked courtesies I received at your hand. / Should you ever visit Chicago I shall expect the pleasure of entertaining you at my house. / I am very truly yours E.B. Washburne." Graff 4552. Elihu B. Washburne 1816-1887 was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the state of Illinois serving from 1853-1869. An ardent abolitionist Washburne was a leader among the Radical Republicans in Congress. During the Civil War he was a strong supporter of President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant. When Grant was elected president in 1868 Washburne briefly served as Secretary of State then was appointed Minister to France. In retirement Washburne wrote a memoir of his time spent in France titled Recollections of a Minister to France 1869-1877. The work was published shortly before his death in 1887. First Edition first printing of the first volume of her celebrated 'Lark Rise to Candleford' trilogy. 8vo. 288pp. Brown cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. Top edge lightly dust soiled and with just a touch of spotting to the fore edge occasionally encroaching just a fraction to the leaf margins and to the free endpapers. A little light partial browning to the half-title and final text leaf but a lovely crisp copy thereafter. Former owner name and date inked to the head of the front free endpaper. Very good in a somewhat distressed example of the uncommon dust wrapper featuring two further Lamb drawings which do not appear in the text. The wrapper is price-clipped and chipped with two one-inch sized portions of loss to the top edge two further small areas of edge-loss and a little dust soiling and chafing several tiny closed tears and several small areas of surface abrasion. A pair of historical works written by Harold Lamb on the subject of the crusades. A very popular series this two-volume history led to his discovery by Cecil B. DeMille who employed Lamb as a technical advisor on his film 'The Crusades'. Comprised of 'Iron Men & Saints' and 'The Flame of Islam' which provide a thrilling history of this particular period with themes of chivalry and feuding.With 14 illustrations and a frontispiece to 'Iron Men & Saints' and 19 illustrations a frontispiece and 4 maps to 'The Flame of Islam'. Collated complete. Ink notation to the front endpaper. Bound in the publisher's red cloth with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally very good with light bumping and a little fading to the extremities and spine fading heavier to 'Flame of Islam'. The odd mark to cloth. Ink note to front endpaper. Dust wrapper's are sound with chipping and loss to the extremities and a few closed tears. Light soiling to wraps with tape repair to the verso. Tape adhering plastic cover to the front paste down of 'Flame of Islam'. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with a few spots heavier to the front. Our author anatomist and naturalist Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton 1716-1800 had collaborated with Buffon on his "Histoire Naturelle" for which he provided anatomical descriptions of 182 quadrupeds earning as a result a reputation as an expert in comparative anatomy. In the present work first published in 1782 he focuses on sheep a subject in which he had a vested interest having introduced the Merino breed to France in an effort to improve the country's wool industry. The text covers all aspects of sheep breeding anatomy and husbandry and is accompanied by engravings of cheerful shepherds at their work the processing of wool dissected sheep organs and related images. These are attractively rendered offering visual appeal as well as scientific and agricultural data. Our third edition the first published following Daubenton's death includes an introductory biography by Étienne de Lacépède which he had delivered as a speech at the National Museum of Natural History. While "Instruction Pour les Bergers" appears in the market with some regularity the present exceptionally bright wide-margined partly unopened copy in contemporary boards is an unusually appealing copy of this work.
