1802ST20800Paris: L'Imprimeries de la République An X 1802. Third Edition. 220 x 137 mm. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2". lxiv 536 pp.
Contemporary blue marbled paper boards flat spine edges untrimmed four quires UNOPENED. WITH 22 ENGRAVED PLATES by Patas after Fossier. Rear endpaper with 19th century price calculations in ink. Small inconsequential tears to ends of joints and spine backstrip creases and chafing minor scuffing to boards but AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY the insubstantial unsophisticated binding entirely solid and with very little soiling and the interior REMARKABLY CLEAN FRESH AND BRIGHT.

With a suite of 22 illustrations this comprehensive work on sheep husbandry "Instructions for Shepherds and Flock Owners" is offered here in a remarkably well-preserved fully contemporary copy in its original fragile paper boards. Our author anatomist and naturalist Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton 1716-1800 had collaborated with Buffon on his "Histoire Naturelle" for which he provided anatomical descriptions of 182 quadrupeds earning as a result a reputation as an expert in comparative anatomy. In the present work first published in 1782 he focuses on sheep a subject in which he had a vested interest having introduced the Merino breed to France in an effort to improve the country's wool industry. The text covers all aspects of sheep breeding anatomy and husbandry and is accompanied by engravings of cheerful shepherds at their work the processing of wool dissected sheep organs and related images. These are attractively rendered offering visual appeal as well as scientific and agricultural data. Our third edition the first published following Daubenton's death includes an introductory biography by Étienne de Lacépède which he had delivered as a speech at the National Museum of Natural History. While "Instruction Pour les Bergers" appears in the market with some regularity the present exceptionally bright wide-margined partly unopened copy in contemporary boards is an unusually appealing copy of this work. Since the first publication of this volume in 1959 the series of illustrated reference books of which it is a part has grown to four volumes which illustrate 1321 species of which over 300 are now in colour. Although these four volumes are regarded as something of a complete library each stands distinctively in its own right. These pictorial encyclopaedias pro vide a unique reference and a means of quick and easy recognition of cacti and other succulents. Every plant illustrated is captioned with its name together with the Botanical Authoritycountry of origin notes on colour size and general cultivation. The information is intended to be non-technical and readily understood by the average collector who follows the hobby for pleasure yet wishes to know a little more. The author's famous Exotic Collection is among the finest and most representative in the world and he and his son Brian Lamb-both experts in colour and black-and-white photog raphy-have been able to draw on a vast number of plants which have been studied and photographed under actual growing conditions. 1955000158London: Blandford Press 1955 Volume One. This illustrated reference provides the means of quick and easy recognition of cacti and succulents. From the author's long and extensive experience in building up and cultivating a very large collection of these plants he makes valuable observations on their care and habits. He has given a page to each plant and has grouped the various genera under the main groups. Each specimen is clearly photographed together with its name country of origin and notes on colour size and general cultivation. Nearly 250 plants are illustrated in this work including 32 in full colour. The information in this book is intended to be non-technical and readily understood by the average collector who enjoys the hobby for pleasure yet wishes to know a little more on the subject. However the Botanical Authority to which each plant is ascribed is put in abbreviated italics following the plant name which some collectors like for easy reference. Mr. Lamb has a world-wide reputa tion as an authority on cacti and succulents; all the coloured and black and white pictures in this book were photographed by him in his own collection in the south of England. Although published in four volumes each book is a stand alone publication. Sellotape marks on first page. ------------------ Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
