An uncommon collection of essays written by Charles Lamb under his eponymous pseudonym.Lamb was a close personal friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and was also in the circle of many other noted writers such as Percy Bysshe Shelley William Hazlitt and Leigh Hunt.Bound in half calf and marbled boards and decorated with marbled endpapers and text block edges red morocco spine labels and elegant gilt tooling along the spines.Bookplates of a Thomas Appach to the front paste downs. Bound in half calf and marbled boards. Externally smart. Mild shelf wear. Small closed tear to paper at vol2 board fore edge. Small surface loss to leather at vol1 top front spine tip. Vol1 hinges starting between blanks. Gift ink inscription to front blank of both volumes. Bookplates to front paste downs. Internally firmly bound with occasional mild strain. Pages generally bright and clean with areas of spotting towards the very front and rear of the works. Slight fading to joints. Vol1 front free endpaper has been pasted to vol1 front blank. Pigskin-backed paper boards lettered in red. Printed on oriental Okawara paper. Typography by Will Ransom Chinese characters by Sang Ho. A somewhat bizarre stab at orientalism. The pictures were first printed in black and then the vivid Japanese watercolours were done by hand by a team of young artists who copied from Jones's originals. One of the figures depicts George Bernard Shaw squeezing his nose. A very good copy in an attractive early binding of full burgundy calf. Spine with raised bands each with gilt wavy line decoration. Compartments double ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Double ruled gilt borders to both boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Gilt stamped school arms on the front board. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bindery. A little rubbing to the edges but still a lovely copy in a fine early leather binding. The book is not dated but a search of Copac shows a copy of this same edition in the Cambridge University Library where they have dated its publication to 1883.</p> George Routledge and Sons. Ltd.
