Lamb a long-time clerk for the British East India Company began writing essays under the pseudonym "Elia" which he derived from a former colleague's surname. Lamb wrote in a colloquial and conversational style that made his essays beloved by his Edwardian and Victorian readers. Widely acknowledged as being essential to the understanding of Charles Lamb's writings the author's letters to other literary figures of his time shed light on his own work and Romantic literature. Written between 1796 and 1826 the recipients of the letters include Samuel Taylor Coleridge Robert Southey and William Wordsworth. Interestingly when his letters were first published they were heavily edited because many of them referred to the ongoing mental health struggles that his sister Mary also an author was experiencing. It was not until after her death that the letters could be published in their original uncensored form. Hard Cover. Very Good. New York and Boston: The Lamb Publishing Company and C. T.
