1955BC19268Harvill Press Ltd. London 1955. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First UK Edition first printing. 8vo. vii 230pp. Grey pebbled cloth lettered in gold at the spine. Some light partial toning to the free endpapers and a contemporary former owner name and date neatly inked to the front pastedown and entirely obscured by the wrapper flap. A very good copy in very good pictorial dust wrapper designed by Lynton Lamb non-price-clipped but lightly toned at the rear panel and with several small slivers of loss from the spine ends and from several corner tips. Arguably the author's most famous novel its title subsequently used to describe the period of liberalization following the death of Stalin. It was first printed in a spring 1954 issue of Soviet monthly literary journal 'Novy Mir' and the first bookform edition sold out all 45000 copies in a single day although the story did attract criticism from the authorities.
