He held office under Lord Palmerston as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1855 and as Lord Privy Seal between 1855 and 1858. Harrowby was born in London the son of Dudley Ryder 1st Earl of Harrowby and Lady Susan d. 1838 daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess of Stafford. He was educated at Christ Church Oxford. He was Under-Secretary of State for War under Benjamin Disraeli between 1874 and 1875. Pembroke was the eldest son of Sidney Herbert 1st Baron Herbert of Lea only son of George Augustus Herbert 11th Earl of Pembroke by his second wife Catherine née Countess Woronzow. His mother was Elizabeth Herbert Baroness Herbert of Lea daughter of Lieutenant-General Charles Ashe A'Court. Published in Vanity Fair 16 July 1870.Hugh Lupus Grosvenor 1st Duke of Westminster KG PC JP 13 October 1825 – 22 December 1899 styled Viscount Belgrave between 1831 and 1845 and Earl Grosvenor between 1845 and 1869 and known as The Marquess of Westminster between 1869 and 1874 was an English landowner politician and racehorse owner. He inherited the estate of Eaton Hall in Cheshire and land in Mayfair and Belgravia London and spent much of his fortune in developing these properties. Although he was a member of parliament from the age of 22 and then a member of the House of Lords his main interests were not in politics but rather in his estates in horse racing and in country pursuits. He developed the stud at Eaton Hall and achieved success in racing his horses winning the Derby on four occasions. Grosvenor also took an interest in a range of charities. Vincent Brooks Day & Son Lith. Scarce.Sir Reginald Hanson 1st Baronet JP DL FSA 31 May 1840 – 18 April 1905 was Lord Mayor of London and a British Conservative Party politician. The son of Samuel and Mary Hanson née Choppin Reginald was educated at Tonbridge School Rugby School and Trinity College Cambridge MA LLD. The then headmaster of Rugby School Dr Frederick Temple later Archbishop of Canterbury said of Hanson on his departure "I have a most sincere and warm regard for him. The manly desire he shows to get rid of his faults and to do his duty will always deserve the respect of all who know him. There are a few from who I part with so much regret at my own loss". Indeed this sense of duty was upheld and he held numerous positions of public office. Following graduation the young Reginald joined the Commercial Union Assurance Company now part of Aviva plc which was previously co-founded by his father Samuel. Within a year he was appointed to the Board of directors where he remained until 1882. By this time he had already joined the family wholesale grocery business Samuel Hanson & Son Limited. He held a number of civic posts notably as an Alderman of Billingsgate London from 1880 and Sheriff of London and Middlesex 1881-82. From 1882-85 Hanson was a member of the London School Board. In 1886 he was elected Lord Mayor of London during which time Queen Victoria celebrated her Jubilee year. In 1887 Sir Reginald entertained Her Majesty at the Mansion House where he was created a Baronet by her having previously been knighted. Guests that day included the explorer Henry Morton Stanley and Judge Thomas Hughes author of Tom Brown's Schooldays. Conservative Member of Parliament for the City of London from 1891 to 1900 Hanson was also an Honorary Colonel of the 6th Battalion Royal Fusiliers City of London Regiment. He died in 1905 and is buried in Highgate Cemetery leaving behind two sons Gerald Sir Gerald Stanhope Hanson 2nd Baronet Francis Sir Francis Stanhope Hanson - Knight Bachelor and two daughters Violet and Maud. Panizzi held posts at the British Museum Library first Assistant Librarian 1831-37 then Keeper of Printed Books 1837-56 and finally Principal Librarian 1856-66. For his services as a librarian in 1869 he was knighted by Queen Victoria.<br /> The British Museum library was in fact the national library of the United Kingdom in all but name; during Panizzi's tenure as Keeper of Printed Books its holdings increased from 235000 to 540000 volumes making it the largest library in the world at the time. Its famous circular Reading Room was designed and built by architect Sydney Smirke from a sketch drawn by Panizzi. Accompanied by original descriptive text. One small mark in the image. unknown
