12906pg. 8 " x 11". December 5 1939 & December 6 1939. Clearfield PA. An archive of letters from the 1939 case of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Various Individuals on Charge of Aiding and Abetting in Cock Fighting. The letter from the law firm of Smith & Maine explains the subsequent documents: "A transcript of the docket of 'Squire Johnston in connection with proceedings against a substantial number of individuals on charges of aiding and abetting in cock fighting has been handed to me for attention. It is my understanding that the Court directed the County Controller to make an audit or investigation of the record in the hands of 'Squire Johnston to determine the present status of affairs with particular reference to collection and disposition of certain fines and forfeitures. The transcript seems to fully set forth the desired information and I will be prepared to discuss the matter with you at your convenience." The following pages show the legal transcripts for the alleged cock fight that took place on June 11 1939. 68 men were charged with violating the state law and 28 of them were made to pay a fine of $10 a piece for failure to appear in court. The archive is in good shape with slight toning fold-separations and ink-smudge issues that do not affect legibility unknown

COPY "G" OF 26 LETTERED COPIES on 125 gsm Stardream paper and five copies on 110 gsm Plike paper. 245 x 143 mm. 9 3/4 x 5 5/8". 20 leaves.
Original card covers wrapped in a shiny orange chemise upper wrapper with title printed in dark orange. Printed in color throughout. ◆In mint condition.

An alchemy of typography color words and design this is an impeccably printed work that plays on the word "allotropes"--a term used in chemistry that refers to the different states a particular element may take such as graphite and diamond for carbon. As we admire the vibrant color combinations juxtaposed with shifting letter forms the printer also invites us to consider the science and experimentation inherent to this work using diagrams chemical notations and images that look as if they were taken from under a microscope to provoke our imaginations. The shimmering paper on which the text is printed here and especially the glistening orange cover make a very pleasing impression. The poet/artist/typographer/printer Phillip Gallo has been printing concrete and visual poetry since he founded his Hermetic Press in 1965. His books are in important collections around the world including in the Museum of Modern Art and the Walker Art Center. The Hermetic Press unknown
