pp. 226 + 11 Color chromolithograph plates of birds, drawn by Robert & John L. Ridgway; and Giles Lithograph & Liberty Printing Co., New York. The great bird plates have some damp stain, but could be easily washed. + Plus 15 line drawn plates of fish. Folio. Most of the original full leather binding remains, but it is best to consider this as disbound. Arctic Series of Publications issued in Connection with the Signal Service, U.S. Army, No. II. The bird illustrators deserve special note. Robert Ridgway (1850-1929) was one America's leading ornithologists. At the age of 17, he was appointed zoologist on a geological survey of the 40th parallel. From 1874 until his death, he served as ornithologist and curator of the Smithsonian Institute. Ridgway established a system of color standards and nomenclature that is still used today. Robert's younger brother John was chief illustrator for United States Geological Survey and an artist for the California Institute of Technology and Carnegie Institution of Washington. Roy. 8vo., Second Edition, with tinted engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, 23 fine tinted engraved plates of views, numerous fine engraved illustrations of species in the text, and floral patterned endpapers, small neat signature on front free endpaper verso; original green cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in gilt, hinges tender (but binding wholly sound), a very good, bright, clean copy. Originally published as two volumes folio in 1879, Houghton's 'Fishes' is one of the finest illustrated natural history works of the nineteenth century, with fine coloured plates by Lydon and woodblock prints by Fawcett. The daunting cost of the original publication led to the present (second) edition (published by Fawcett and aimed at the angler rather than the collector) which replaces the coloured plates with tinted views but retains the fine engraved illustrations of species in the text. Freeman 1782; Nissen ZB12009 (recording the first edition). INEXPLICABLY, THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE IS NOT RECORDED BY HAMPTON.
