Original full red leather binding. Boards embossed in blind and ruled in gold. Spine decorated and lettered in gold with raised bands. Front board detached. Inked inscription "To "the Duke" Lauren Stout from his old friend, Leonard L. Mackall Sept. 19, 1925. Mackall (1879-1937) was a famous bibliographer, book collector, and historian. Though his greatest contributions were probably in the field of medical bibliography, his first love was Goethe. Samuel Naylor, the editor & translator of this edition, was a great friend of Goethe who was originally responsible for this version. He wrote: "The Low-German edition (Reinke de Vos). is that from which I have worked hovering. between translation and paraphrase." First issed in 1844, this particular edition is really quite scarce.
