Laid in a PAN bookmark.<br /> <br /> The journal PAN is regarded as one of the most important voices of Jugendstil Art Nouveau in Germany publishing art literature theater and music. As the journal Jugend it took a critical approach to the artistic policy of the German Empire under Emperor Wilhelm. Published in Berlin by the cooperative PAN the journal spans five volumes with five issues in 1985/96 and four issues each in the subsequent years up to 1900. Due to its high quality art reproductions PAN was the most expensive German artistic magazine of its time. The journal was published in a standard a luxury and an artist edition of the same content with a run of 1200 to 1600 per issue. It stopped publication in 1900 and was re-launched under the direction of the Berlin art dealer and publisher Paul Cassirer for a run of three additional three years.<br /> <br /> This copy is illustrated with nine full page copperplate engravings with tissue guards by Albert Krüger 2 Hans Olde Walter Leistikow Wilhelm Volz Arnold Böcklin Peter Behrens Johan Rohde and F. Hammerschöj and numerous head and endpieces and in-text engravings. The list of contributors to the magazine included famous protagonists as well as unknown young international artists. <br /> <br /> This issue includes the famous image "The Kiss" by Peter Behrens considered among the most iconic images of the Jugendstil/ Art Noveau movement.<br /> <br /> In addition there are literary contributions by by Hugo von Hofmannsthal Richard Dehmel Wilhelm Bode Rudolf Schick Friedrich Carstanjen on Peter Behrens A. Brunnemann N. V. Dorpb Woldemar von Seidlitz and a facsimile reproduction of Theodor Fontane's last poem found on his writing table. With table of contents and colophon in two colors at rear.<br /> <br /> Text in German. Wraps with light wear along edges and water stain "framing" the illustration on front cover not affecting illustration. Water-staining in margins of front free endpaper title page first full page print diminished on page with Fontane's poem. Water stain along gutter of pages 110-112.
