In all the same but enlarged with Bodes newly engraved plates which included about 50 percent additional stars and constellations in improved positions over the 5000 stars included in Flamsteeds coordinate system. The Vorstellung der Gestirne was updated and reissued one more time by Bode in 1805 only after J. J. de Lalande and Pierre F. A. Mechain published their updated version of Fortins star atlas in 1795 and Christian Goldbach published his version in 1799. Johann Elert Bode 17471826 royal astronomer and director of the Berlin Observatory for almost 40 years sought to improve the coverage and accuracy of celestial cartography in his time he also wanted to provide charts for the amateur astronomer. Working alongside such contemporaries as Charles Messier 17301817 who first published the Messier objects list in 1771 and then again in 1781 Bodes Vorstellung der Gestirne also identified non-stellar objects like nebulae clusters and binary stars. The expert engraver of these whimsical night sky pictures Daniel Berger 17441825 came from a family of Berlin-based artists who were highly trained and well-regarded in their trade. This copy of the Vorstellung der Gestirne incorporates two manuscript leaves of added indices; the first register was based on Bodes later and larger star catalogue: the Uranographia sive Astrorum Descriptio 1801 containing summary counts and comparisons for stars. The other comprises a list about meridians arranged by time midnight and by the first day of the month. Doubtless an avid 19th century student of astronomy keenly familiar with Bodes works poured over both publications in order to create a larger reference system. It is an utterly unique addition to an already extraordinary publication representing the best in astronomical illustration and scientific advancement in the Age of Enlightenment. It is the second complete catalogue of his works ever made a remarkable achievement in the history of art. The 595 different paintings many of which were here attributed to Rembrandt for the first time are beautifully reproduced with full-page photogravures. The two largest paintings de Nachtwacht the Nightwatch and de Staalmeesters the Sampling Officials have even been printed on two pages. These stunning volumes are the result of 12 years of research. They were printed in limited number and initially only distributed to subscribers. The present edition printed on Holland paper consisted of only 500 copies. The present work is number 196.The work describes and depicts Rembrandt's paintings in chronological order with each volume focussing on a different time period of his career. The paintings are all accompanied by a short description. The final volume shows Rembrandts life as a whole. It starts with a short biography shows paintings that are only known from etchings and discusses letters and other documents written by Rembrandt which are also included in the catalogue as photogravures. The work offers a complete overview of what was known about Rembrandt's life and work at the time. The first Rembrandt catalogue published in 1836 by John Smith contained 614 different paintings. When art historian Wilhelm Bode or Wilhelm von Bode 1845-1929 together with art historian Cornelis Hofstede de Groot 1863-1930 published the present catalogue 60 years later concensus about Rembrandt's oeuvre had changed. He rejected many of Smith's attributions but also added around 60 new discoveries. The most major one was The man with the golden helmet which Bode bought for the Gemäldegallerie in Berlin when he was the curator there. Unlike Smith Bode was also interested in Rembrandt's drawings prints and letters because he believed Rembrandt had to be studied as a whole in order to truly understand him and his work. As such he became a leading expert on Rembrandt and hugely influenced the acquisitions of museums and private collectors. While Bode and Hofstede de Groot attributed almost 600 works mainly paintings to Rembrandt experts now attribute approximately 250 paintings to Rembrandt himself ascribing many others to his students and working in Rembrandt's atelier. Nevertheless the present work is of vital importance for the general understanding of Rembrandt and his works.A few of the volumes have white chalk spots on the front board and the back turn in. The cloth title-pages are somewhat scratched around the edges the blank leaves at the start and end of each volume are discoloured the front flyleaves of volume 5 and 8 are creased the tissue paper protecting each plate has discoloured the surrounding leaves the upper outer corner of p. 107 in volume 2 has torn without affecting the text the tissue paper of plate 486 in volume 7 has detached. Otherwise in very good condition.l Cf. Wheelock A. K. Issues of attribution in the Rembrandt workshop National Gallery of Art online. ABE CAT Art History hardcover

180119781Berlin: Selbstverlag Chez l’auteur 1801. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Printed in German and French with the text in 2 columns. Unbound sheets folded in signatures uncut; in absolutely beautiful condition a phenomenal newly discovered gem. First and only edition of the text volume to Bode’s Uranography published the same year. This text volume was printed separate and apart from the star atlas which set a new benchmark in the field proving itself as a true successor to the great atlases of Bayer Hevelius and Flamsteed. Bode’s atlas is noted for a number of stars lying outside of the constellations and he proposed the concept of boundaries to these constellations that would with later adjustments become “fundamental to astronomy†Whitfield.

Bode 1747-1826 was director of the Berlin observatory and editor of the Astronomisches Jahrbuch. He played an important role in the development of astronomy in Germany becoming Royal Astronomer and a member of the Berlin Academy. He gave the name Uranus to Herschel’s newly discovered planet.

DSB II p. 220; Warner p. 39; Whitfield p. 104. Selbstverlag, Chez l’auteur, unknown

Wikipedia paperback
