J. Binder." Illustrated with 299 extraordinary b/w photogravures on 194 plates. Both volume contain catalog of paintings. Volume 2 with an additional catalog of paintings arranged according to locality. Bindings rubbed with light wear along edges and gilt library markings on spines. Ex-library. Santa Monica Public Library book plates 4 and Discard stamp on front endpapers of both volumes. Date and name of library stamped on title pages in both volumes as is a perforated library stamp. 26477On letterhead of 'Via Marsilio Ficino 12 Firenze'. 24 September 1913. A significant letter filling gaps in the provenance of Bellini's Crucifixion now in the Louvre. All that has been known hitherto about the painting's provenance is that at the beginning of the twentieth century it was in the Paris collection of the banker Rodolphe Kann and that before the Second World War it was owned by the Florentine dealer Alessandro Contini Bonacossi from whose heirs it was acquired by the Louvre in 1970. The present item reveals that the painting was acquired from the recipient Fisher probably the auctioneer George Fisher by the London art dealer Agnew by whom it was sold to Kann. Nor has Murray's ownership of the painting hitherto been noted and it seems that Bonacossi acquired it as he did several other works at the sale of Murray's collection in 1923. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged and creased paper. After explaining that he has sent the letter in expectation that Fisher has returned from a foreign trip Murray continues: 'I have a little piece of news that will interest you. Two days ago I re-purchased this time definitely for myself your Bellini "Crucifixion". I have been very sorry ever since Agnew London art dealer sold it to that ignoble Jew German Kann the banker Rodolphe Kann that I was unable to purchase it then. The subsequent history is curious. When the Kann collection passed into the hands of Duveen in 1907 it remained unsold partly no doubt owing to the subject & partly to its being unsigned. It requires happily for me an intelligent art lover to appreciate its beauty. Duveen presented it to Dr. Bode Wilhelm von Bode in recognition of his help in selling the greater part of the collection. For some reason monetary perhaps he Bode did not present it to the Berlin Museum. but placed it in the hands of his crony Volpi Count Elia Volpi here for sale. Volpi included it in an auction he had here some time back but not getting the sum hoped for bought it in. It has remained in his hands since.' Murray had 'long ceased to visit' Volpi but after writing to him was 'well received. I promptly seized the occasion to re-possess myself of the long coveted treasure together with a very fine bust of a cardinal ascribed to Bernini. So both now decorate my picture gallery since yesterday.' He concludes by giving his plans for returning to London and in the hope that 'Mrs Fisher is better'. Tabloid newspaper comix. complete 24 pages including cover - 12 sheets folded no staples or bindings were used. browning as per usual with this title and some spotting not a very carefully stored copy. vintage creasing to center it tended to be stored folded in half chips to the spine cover and outer corners of the pages. about 3'' tear at center fold outer edge just barely short of the cover art by Crumb but not damaging any exterior art. It does cut into a panel of Bode's work on the inside cover but there is not anything missing there it's just torn. Small closed tear to outer edge of the cover at the middle. else VG. The 2nd issue of this Underground Comix tabloid newspaper with art by Robert Crumb Vaughn Bode Brand Kim Deitch Kaluta Lynch Spain Rodriguez Art Spiegelman Todd Trina Wilson and others. Bagged for protection with a stiff backing board will ship flat. Also included is a Bonus 1970 Underground art tabloid close to the same dimensions as GBW2 it's either coverless or untitled. It has half page or full page illustrations many signed '70'. 14 pages 6 folded 1 half sheet at the center 2 pieces of the art are signed - by Dan Barker Mike Hill the rest is either indecipherable or unsigned it has a waterstain to the spine & some minor spotting to the edge. I received them both folded up together so I'm leaving them together. GBW2 is Graded 1.8/10 GOOD- using the Overstreet comic book grading system. Bagged with backing board. Shows substantial wear.
