A contemporary owner has annotated and underlined several sections in the Tea Act. 92 pp. 8vo. These acts passed that years were seen by the author as being the most pertinent and so included in this work the rest of the acts of Parliament were to be released shortly thereafter in a second part.<br/><br/>The acts abstracted were the 1 Tea and Window repealing the several Duties and for granting other duties in lieu and duties on coffee and cocoa nuts Act 2 The Game Act hunting license 3 The Horse Act granting duties on riding and carriage horses 4 The Postage Act increasing postage rates 5 The Pawn Broker's Act trying to reduce the handling of stolen goods 6 The Soap and Starch Act requiring the licensing of makers of starch and instilling new laws on soapmakers 7 The Cotton and Linen Act placing duties 8 The Hatter's Act requiring licenses laying additional duties on imported hats 9 The Excise Goods Act laying duties upon licences to be taken out by the makers and delers in exciseable commodities 10 The Candle Act cancelling the duty on wax candles made in Britain 11 The Distillery Act trying to discourage home distillation by discontinuing the duties uon low wines and spirits for home consumption. 12 The Hackney Coach Act increasing the charge for Hackey license 13 The Smuggling Act trying to prevent 14 Brick and Tile Act placing duties on brick and tile made in Great Britain and additional duties on those imported 15 Wax Candle Act placing additional duties on all candles except wax and spermaceti candles. 1851WRCAM55569Gonzales County Tx. 1851. 2pp. on a folded folio sheet. Old folds a few ink smudges. Very good. An original manuscript agreement setting the terms of a horse race in Texas in 1851. The document is signed by the principal parties to the contest Byrd Smith and Richard Parr both of Gonzales Texas as well as witnesses C.C. DeWitt and A.S. Miller. <br> <br> The agreement totaling approximately 375 words reads in part: <br> <br> "Article sic of agreement between Byrd Smith.& Richard Parr.we the above named parties agree to run a Race six weeks from this date said race to be run between A.S. Miller's & John G. King's on the old tracks the distance of eight hundred yards.the said Byrd Smith to run a certain Bay horse called by the name of Boy Jim.the above named Parr is to run a certain sorrell sic mare called Lucy Red Fox.for the sum of one thousand Dollars.the above race to be run between the hours of 12 & 4 o'clock." <br> <br> Each of the horses is identified in the agreement by physical marks and with brands written as symbols. Additionally there is a description of the filly whose "left hind foot is white a little above the hoof with a white strike in the said hoof and a few white hairs in her face." The weight each horse is to carry is stipulated and each horse owner was required to post a $500 bond at the time of signing to be held by one William A. Matthews in case of forfeiture. <br> <br> The six names mentioned in connection to this race all had solid backgrounds in antebellum Gonzales County Texas. C.C. DeWitt A.S. Miller and William A. Mathews are all listed as stockholders in "An Act to Establish & Incorporate Gonzales County College." John G. King Sr. a grant holder in Gonzales County died there in 1856. Byrd Smith was a private in an 1841 Gonzales County militia company. Finally Richard Parr was killed in Gonzales County in 1855 - over a land squabble not a horse racing debt. <br> <br> Antebellum Texas documents on sports of any kind are exceedingly rare. Material relating to horse racing is especially hard to find considering the state did not officially sanction the sport until well into the 20th century after pari-mutuel betting was approved in 1925. unknown books

5037HORSE RACING. ALS. 3pg. 8†x 9 ¾â€. February 7 1833. New York NY. An autograph letter signed “Eliza Colden†to William P. Haskins of Troy New York. The letter regards a racetrack rental gone wrong. This is a very early mention of American racetracks since they were not in common use until after the Civil War. In part: “I understand that Mr. Colden wrote yesterday to Mrs. Wells making an offer for the Course but at the time he did it he had no conception that Mr. Dey had gone over to the other party and rented the course to Burr’s man Mr. Botts during the next Races for the trifling sum of $350. I feel hurt to think that while we were doing every thing in good faith to aid and assist and after having spent my money that we should be thus treated Mr. Dey not even thinking it worth while to mention the subject to either myself or Mr. Colden. Had Mr. Dey done his duty and got possession and you wished to have rented the property you might have got $1000 for it during next May Races. I write this letter without the knowledge of Mr. Colden in order if possible to prevent mischief which I fear it will be too late to prevent. He is outrageous and says that as the other party have acted treacherously and gone over too Burr he does not see why he should not make terms with Burr also Burr had made overtures to him which he has here to fore rejected with disdain as I am told but I now fear your will be the sufferers…â€. Many early racetracks were operated by the rich to showcase their horses; they frequently appeared and quickly disappeared. Eliza Colder may have been related to Cadwallader Colden 1769-1834 the mayor of New York City from 1818 to 1821. Aaron Burr 1756-1836 was Vice President and the killer of Alexander Hamilton in a duel; later in life he served as a New York attorney. The letter is in fine condition with light toning and folds. unknown books

The majestic horse wears an embelished gold and red saddle that matches the gold and red uniform of the groom holding it. Beside the groom is an aide-de-camp dressed in a green uniform standing with sword in sheath. The background is an elaborate carpeted stone staircase with Arabic motifs leading to the open doors of the Pera Palace Hotel. Overall a very attractive and sharp image. Photographer's stamp on verso: "Photographie Apollon. Gulmez Feres Photographes de S.M.I. le Sultan. Succursale vis-a-vis le Pera Palace Hotel. Constantinoples." 14693Antique engraving of four horses from "Westasiatische Thiere" West Asian Animals printed in Prague in 1810. The engraving has two images both illustrating horses. The top engraving depicts a Middle Eastern man wearing a turban handling the reins of two lively black and white Arabian horses that prance under the label "Das Arabische Pferd" The Arabian Horse. In the bottom image another man in a turban and boots leads a pair of strong dappled Turkish horses labeled "Das Turkische Pferd" The Turkish Horse. All of the horses are beautiful intact stallions that symbolize the virility strength and spirit of their regions. Plate is approximately 7"x10". An attractive piece for any horse enthusiast.
