1886238620Cairo 1886. Each 4 pp. Some rubbing. Each 4 pp. Gezira Sporting Club is the largest multi-sport facility in Egypt. It was founded in 1882 and was originally called Khedivial Sporting Club. Both of these programs are annotated in pencil by an unknown spectator - "all that didn't run have a heavy black mark. All that won have a light one and are marked 1 2 or 3 as the call may be." As stipulated on the rear of each program pari mutuel betting was the order of the day. unknown books

Each of the ten races is named e.g. The Opening Stakes "Half-mile course"; The Winter Steeple Chase "for all horses that have been at the front before Sebastopol since 1st December 1854"; The Sebastopol Grand Military Steeple Chase "for all horses the property of Officers in the Allied Forces"; The Moke States "for all mules"; etc. and each entrant was charged a fee from five shillings to two pounds; second place would generally save his stake the balance to the winner. The second day was given over to the troops with a 25 pound purse for "Foot Races and other Sports for the men of the 3rd Division." Not located on OCLC RLIN or COPAC. <br/><br/> unknown books

While some saw the book as an attack on the administration of the Commander-in-chief's office under the Duke of Wellington the British Library see it as a satire. Bound in original color pictorial paper covered boards rebacked in brown morocco lettered and ruled in gilt wear to corners and edges previous owner's name. There are also six miniatures adapted by Renton from a fifteenth centu Dutch Passionale. The whole was printed on dampened Barcham Green Bodleian Repairing paper by George Mackley. There is very light wear to the extremiti of the spine on this fragile binding else a very good copy. Very uncommon this English private press of the 'sixties--which also used the imprint of Th Two Colt Press. unknown books
