The village and its Chapelle de Notre Dame constructed in 1479 is today a UNESCO heritage site as part of the St. James' Way pilgrimage route. The site first gained popularity as a pilgrim destination during the Middle Ages but by the early 19th century was in ruins first with the arrival of the Huguenots in the 16th century and pillaged again during the French Revolution. Not until the mid-19th century were funds raised by the bishops of Cahors used to restore the site. This guidebook would have been produced shortly after the restoration and provides handsomely illustrated descriptions of the village the numerous Chapelles and surviving relics. Preface dated 1862; attributed to the abbé Cheval by the BNF. Victor Bertuot unknown

19212571Philadelphia: Racego Game Company 1921. Good in a Poor box. Box: 9-3/4 x 12 inches. Game includes: linen board printed in green yellow black and red 26-1/2 x 26-3/4 inches when unfolded; 4pp set of directions for play printed in black on cream paper; six metal playing pieces in the shape of jockeys riding horses painted black or brown numbered consecutively and housed in a cardboard holder with individual "stalls" for the pieces; cardboard box containing 60 flat circular red white and blue bone betting counters.Based on a description of Go! in a 1922 ad in Modern Stationer this copy of the game is lacking 40 betting counters but is otherwise complete. Heavy wear to box with splitting to all edges and numerous neat black tape repairs; apron missing from one side of the lid and the lid is now taped to the base at that edge so it opens like a hinge. Light wear to directions; some scuffing to playing pieces. Scarce horse racing-themed board game that capitalizes on the popularity of the sport in the 1920s with pieces named Man o' War Sir Barton Behave Yourself Broomspun Gray Lag and Audacious -- all famous racing horses of the era. Using an ordinary deck of cards not included players move the pieces around the board in such a way that "the horses speed up or drop back pass each other and fight for the 'pole' and inside positions just as the live ones do on the track" Directions p.2. Meanwhile the players place wagers on the winners colors and time using white red or blue betting counters to indicate the amount of their wager.Racego Game Company may have been formed solely to sell this game as we find no record of other games associated with it and advertisements for the game only in 1922. The copyright holder James B. Ludlow appears to have been a Philadelphia salesman at the time; census records indicate that he sold a variety of goods but in 1920 was engaged in selling rubber tires. Not located in OCLC although we know of one holding at UVA. Racego Game Company unknown

HORSE RACING. </strong><em>Gibraltar</em><em> Garrison Races. </em><em>Tuesday 3d May 1831</em><em>. To Start at Half-Past </em><em>One O'Clock</em><em>. </em>Small 4to broadside on yellow satin 9 ¾ x 6 3/8" edges fringed. Gibraltar: 1831. </p><p>The day's program and a very rare souvenir of early horse racing at the British garrison of Gibraltar. "I cannot find any record of any formal horse racing on the isthmus or elsewhere in the Campo arc prior to 1765 but the enormous popularity of the Calpe Hunt which established itself as a major institution in Gibraltar in the very early 19th century will undoubtedly have led to impromptu races from time to time and may have been the catalyst for organizing a more formal approach to racing. As early as 1838 Charles Rochfort Scott a Royal Artillery officer stationed in Gibraltar was singing the praises of horse racing on the Rock…From this one might gather that formal racing probably did not begin until after 1821 but that it was definitely in full swing in 1839 by which time it had become a pretty full blooded affair with a considerable number of horses taking part. It also seems to have been an activity in which only the officers of the garrison were allowed to indulge."-Neville Chipolina <em>The People of Gibraltar </em>online which includes a long quote from an article by "Nimrod" Charles James Apperley in Thomas Hook's <em>New Monthly Magazine and Humorist: 1841 Part the Second </em>pp. 42-43 which says "Twenty years back who would have dreamed of races at Gibraltar! Such however is the case now…"</p><p>Owners names given as are weights names of horses and colors. The first three races were Sweepstakes the first "A Handicap Sweepstakes h.f. for all horses. Heats—The Don Mile 5 contestants; the second "for Ponies not exceeding 14 hands high Heats—From Bay-side In 5 contestants; the third "Barbs and English horses excluded Heats—The Don Mile 3 contestants; the last "A Match—The Don Mile" with only two horses listed to run. Horse racing in Gibraltar was included in a novel by Arthur Griffiths entitled <em>Lola: A Tale of Gibraltar </em>NY: 1877. Folded and a little dusty else nearly fine.</p>
