Limited to one thousand copies unnumbered. Each volume is illustrated with a frontispiece and eight plates. Collated complete. A collection of seventy-five stories by Italian author and fairy-tale collector Giovanni Francesco Straparola modeled after Boccaccio's Decameron. It is considered significant as the first European storybook to contain fairy-tales. The Novellino of Masuccio 1895. Complete in two volumes. Limited to one thousand copies of which this is number four hundred and ninety-six. Volume one is illustrated with eight plates. Volume two is illustrated with ten plates. Collated complete. The fifty short stories of fifteenth century Italian poet Masuccio Salernitano each prefaced by a letter of dedication to a famous person and with an epilogue containing the "moral" of the story. The Pecorone of Ser Giovanni 1897. Limited to six hundred copies of which this is number four hundred and twenty-seven. Illustrated with eleven plates. Collated complete. An Italian novella written by Florentine writer Giovanni Fiorentino said to be an influence on Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. In the original full cloth binding. Externally smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Light damp marks to the tail of the spines. Masuccio Salernitano 14101475 born Tommaso Guardati was an Italian poet. Born in Salerno or Sorrento he is best known today for Il Novellino a collection of 50 "novelle" or short stories each prefaced by a letter of dedication to a famous person and with an epilogue containing the "moral" of the story. The Facetious Nights of Straparola 1550-1555; Italian: Le piacevoli notti also known as The Nights of Straparola is a two-volume collection of 75 stories by Italian author and fairy-tale collector Giovanni Francesco Straparola. Complete in four volumes. In cloth bindings. Externally sound though with some bumping and slight wear to the extremities. Internally bindings strained in places with one plate detached. Pages are bright and quite clean with just the odd spot and some foxing to the endpapers. Small tears to a couple of pages. Good Lawrence and Bullen hardcover

A rare book to find in the original yellowback format; original covers laid down lacking the spine former owner's small name stamp on front pastedown sheet and a small inked number on the front fly leaf else a very good copy with interior clean. "Waters" is identified as a detective in the Metropolitan police and many of his cases are reported in this book which is quite readable. This book is a result of the publicity and public relations of the new Metropolitan Police which had been established in the 1820s. An interesting and early historical book in the early days of crime and mystery fiction. Also an early Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone mystery title and a rare book. The inscription is on the front flyleaf which was dampstained but the inscription is not smudged and is legible. William E. Waters was an assistant Army surgeon who kept a diary while traveling from St. Louis to Camp Douglas near Salt Lake City and while being stationed at Camp Douglas in 1867. This book is based on that diary and a series of letters he wrote while in the Utah territory. Pages 106 to 202 are his impressions of the Mormons their Church doctrines and polygamy. The first half of the text is a narrative ".of an Overland Expedition which crossed the plains from Leavenworth via the Black Hills and Bridger's Pass to the Salt Lake Valley." Eberstadt 106:323.
