A couple of internal closed tears some foxing couple of illustrations with light amateur coloring. A fair copy. A rhyming guide to world geography remarkable for its coverage of California. Page 4 has two views of San Francisco and pages 73 to 74 are devoted to California as well. On page 74 is a woodcut map of the gold regions entitled "Valleys of the Sacramento and San Joaquin. Engraved for the Poetical Geography. Wightman Buffalo N.Y." The map shows the area from San Francisco Bay east to the Sierra and from San Jose to the Feather River with the subsidiary streams well delineated. While not the most detailed of maps it is considerably more so than many listed in Wheat. Not in any of the relevant bibliographies. unknown books

Primarily interesting for its early references to California and the California Gold Rush. Preceded by editions dated 1849 and 1850 this edition includes two woodcut views of San Francisco in 1848 and 1849 at page iv as well as two pages 78 and 79 on California which include a map of San Francisco and the waters of the Gold country. The map is titled "Valleys of the Sacramento and San Joaquin" with a note that the map was engraved for the "Poetical Geography" by "Wightman Buffalo NY". This early publication and map do not appear in many reference works including Wheat Gold Rush Wheat Trans-Mississippi Cowan Sabin Graff or Wagner-Camp. Each volume has b/w photogravure engravings with protective Japanese tissue guards. frontispiece First published in 1583 under the title Le piacevoli notti "the pleasant nights" this two-volume collection of fairy tales was written by the Italian writer and fairy-tale collector Giovanni Straparola. It was modeled after the Decamerone by Boccaccio and depicts the participants of a 13-night party on the island of Murano and the wild tales they tell. lt is also known as The Facetious Nights of Straparola. Volume one has nine b/w photogravure engravings including the frontis volume two has nine including frontis and all with protective Japanese tissue guards. Head and tails of spines and edges rubbed and bumped light soiling. Age yellowing to pages acid transfers from engravings mark the tissue guards. Binding in good interior in very good condition.
