Primarily interesting for its early references to California and the California Gold Rush. Preceded by editions dated 1849 and 1850 this edition includes two woodcut views of San Francisco in 1848 and 1849 at page iv as well as two pages 78 and 79 on California which include a map of San Francisco and the waters of the Gold country. The map is titled "Valleys of the Sacramento and San Joaquin" with a note that the map was engraved for the "Poetical Geography" by "Wightman Buffalo NY". This early publication and map do not appear in many reference works including Wheat Gold Rush Wheat Trans-Mississippi Cowan Sabin Graff or Wagner-Camp.
