Charles Darwin, qui faisait l'analogie entre les règnes végétal et animal, a consacré aux plantes plusieurs grandes monographies. L'observation du végétal lui a permis de déduire des phénomènes de changement et donc de développer la théorie transformiste. Lenègre), Seconde édition revue et corrigée de la traduction française de cet ouvrage dont l'originale a paru en anglais en 1872. Cet ouvrage est orné de 21 gravures sur bois de T.W. Wood et sept planches de photographies reproduites par héliotypie; cette technique ayant été inventée par Poitevin en 1855. Pour rédiger cet ouvrage dont il avait eu l'idée longtemps auparavant, Darwin (1809-1882) envoie des questionnaires à plusieurs correspondants. Il conçoit son projet comme une suite à un précédent opus, La filiation de l'homme, qu'il a publié en 1872. Il s'applique ici à essayer d'expliquer les origines des expressions des émotions chez l'homme et l'animal par le biais de sa théorie de l'évolution des espèces par sélection naturelle. On joint un article de la revue Le Monde des sciences et des techniques, de janvier 1974, le catalogue de l'éditeur est relié in-fine.
