A ben oltre un secolo dalla sua morte, le idee di Charles Darwin sono ancora in grado di ispirare scoperte scientifiche, ma di suscitare anche accesi e violenti dibattiti, quasi sempre di natura ideologica. Ma chi era veramente Darwin? E, soprattutto, in quale contesto storico- culturale nacque e maturò la sua rivoluzionaria teoria dell'evoluzione delle specie per selezione naturale? È proprio a queste domande che dà risposta la biografia di Janet Browne, restituendo un'immagine quanto mai vivida e a tutto tondo di Darwin. Una biografia definitiva dell'uomo e dello scienziato, che dipana l'enigma centrale della sua carriera, ovvero come questo tipico gentiluomo inglese di provincia finì per diventare un pensatore capace di sfidare i principi fondamentali della scienza e della religione. Janet Browne racconta ogni minimo dettaglio della vita di Darwin: dall'infanzia alla formazione, dall'avventurosa storia del viaggio intorno al mondo sul Beagle (1831-1836) alla pubblicazione dell'Origine delle specie (1859), il suo capolavoro, e dell'Origine dell'uomo (1871). Sullo sfondo dell'Inghilterra vittoriana, da questa completa e suggestiva biografia Darwin emerge come un genio tranquillo e riservato, come uno scienziato consumato da un'impellente necessità di comprendere la complessità delle forme viventi attraverso un costante lavoro di osservazione e di sperimentazione.

April 1882 in Down House/Grafschaft Kent) war ein britischer Naturforscher. Er gilt wegen seiner wesentlichen Beiträge zur Evolutionstheorie als einer der bedeutendsten Naturwissenschaftler. Die Ende 1831 begonnene und fast fünf Jahre andauernde zweite Reise mit der HMS Beagle, die den jungen Darwin einmal um die Welt führte, war zugleich Schlüsselerlebnis und Grundlage für sein späteres Werk. Der breiten Öffentlichkeit wurde Darwin erstmals durch seinen 1839 herausgegebenen Reisebericht bekannt. Mit seiner Theorie über die Entstehung der Korallenriffe und weiteren geologischen Schriften erlangte er in wissenschaftlichen Kreisen die Anerkennung als Geologe. Seine Untersuchungen an den Rankenfußkrebsen (Cirripedia) verschafften ihm Mitte der 1850er Jahre zusätzlich einen Ruf als angesehener Zoologe und Taxonom. Bereits 1838 entwarf Darwin seine Theorie der Anpassung an den Lebensraum durch Variation und natürliche Selektion und erklärte so die phylogenetische Entwicklung aller Organismen und ihre Aufspaltung in verschiedene Arten. Volume two of Huxley's 'Collected Essays' but complete in itself. First published in the previous year. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.

Nato in Val di Non e laureato a Vienna, Canestrini fu il primo traduttore italiano di Darwin (la sua traduzione di On the Origin of Species è del 1864) ed il primo ad introdurre in Italia le teorie evoluzionistiche. Fu professore di Storia naturale alle Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia e dal 1869 professore di Zoologia, Anatomia comparata e Fisiologia a Padova.
