77716London The Linnean Society 1857. 8vo 22.1 x 14.1 cm. 11 pp. numbered 130-140. Contemporary ruled half calf over marbled boards. Edges speckled red. = A rarely seen contribution by Charles Darwin to studies of the germination of seeds and in particular the effect of their being immersed in or floating on seawater. That seeds may travel for considerable distances borne by ocean currents was a well-known fact; however Charles Darwin was the first to make a scientific inquiry into this phenomenon in particular how immersion in seawater affects the vitality of different seeds. Darwin noted that De Candolle posed this question earlier but that it remained unanswered. Published in Volume I No. 3 of the Society's Journal and Proceedings and followed by a short note on the same subject by James Salter F.L.S. On the Vitality of Seeds after prolonged Submersion in the Sea pp. 140-142. We offer the complete volume. Spine perished front board near detached. Blindstamp of an old British natural history club on the title page and a stamps of the same above the drophead title of the first paper and occasionally on other pages. Endpapers a bit foxed. The text part with Darwin's contribution clean free of stamps foxing or any other blemishes. A very good copy. Freeman 1694. hardcover

Biology" of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Weak vertical fold slight fraying to edges otherwise very good clean. Freeman 1778. unknown

Dark green Murray cloth joints weak a little wear to the spine ends and to the top front edge contents clean and in very good order. FREEMAN #423 - This the Sixth edition is generally considered to be the final text though Darwin did make a number of minor changes in the 1876 edition. Freeman records that Chapter VII is entirely new and '. was inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart. The edition was aimed at a wider public and printed in smaller type the volume shorter again and giving the general impression of a cheap edition which at 7s. 6d. it was. The title changes to The origin of species and a glossary compiled by W. S. Dallas appears. It is in this edition that the word 'evolution' occurs for the first time.' The Glossary in this the 33rd. thousand contains the misprint 'indigeens' for 'indigenes' and the opening sentence of the Historical Sketch reads - 'I will here a give a brief sketch.'. This latter misprint was not corrected until the issue of 1891. John Murray. London. 1888. Sixth Edition, with Additions and Corrections to 1872. (Thirty-Third Thousand.) hardcover
