A handsome book that has seen some wear but remains in good shape for its age. Edited by Ernst Flammarion and translated by Clémence Royer with a preface and notes by Royer. This was at the time a new edition revised from the original with additions by Darwin. Binding is firm. Quarterbound in tan leather and marbled paper boards are lightly rubbed with scuffing at edges and gently bumped corners. Five raised bands tricolor silk ribbon. Paste on label with author and title over spine is partially missing. Marbled endpapers are clean and unmarked. Lower corner of half title with a small chip. Text is age tanned. A number of pages have pencil markings in margins. Several have small stains that do not affect readability. A few pages dogeared. No dust jacket. The Voyage of the Beagle is the title most commonly given to the book written by Charles Darwin and published in 1839 as his Journal and Remarks bringing him considerable fame and respect. This was the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle the other volumes of which were written or edited by the commanders of the ships. Journal and Remarks covers Darwin's part in the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle. Due to the popularity of Darwin's account the publisher reissued it later in 1839 as Darwin's Journal of Researches and the revised second edition published in 1845 used this title. A republication of the book in 1905 introduced the title The Voyage of the "Beagle" by which it is now best known.<br /> This copy is good minus in the publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles on the spine and black blind-stamped title and design on the covers. Moderate wear scuffing and spotting on both covers. The front hinge is cracked and the rear hinge is starting but binding is still holding. A couple of pages have come loose. The endpapers and deckled page edges are age darkened but the text itself is clean. Slight foxing on plates. CH. John Murray hardcover

This voyage took place under Captain Robert FitzRoy an English officer of the Royal Navy politician and scientist who served as the second governor of New Zealand and achieved lasting fame as the captain for this famous voyage. Darwin spent most of that time on land investigating geology and making natural history collections keeping careful notes of his observations and theoretical speculations while HMS Beagle surveyed and charted coasts. Written by Charles Robert Darwin an English naturalist geologist and biologist widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. Bound in full calf.
