Original green cloth covers square a few marks to the spine with a small split to the top edge of the spine plus a vertical crease. Dark brown endpapers front hinge cracked but secure a few spots to the first couple of pages plus a previous owners inscription in ink to the reverse of the free endpaper clear pages some light creasing rough cut page edges three cut untidily causing loss to the margin not affecting the text otherwise neat. First published on the 6th November 1880 and quickly selling out its first 1500 copies this second thousand was published within two months of the first.Authored with the assistance of Darwin's son botanist Francis Darwin the work concerns itself with how plants respond to external stimuli examining these processes in individual plants to gain understanding of general principles governing their growth and life. Featuring numerous vignette illustrations throughout.With a single page of publisher's advertisements to the verso of the half title and a thirty-two page publisher's catalogue dated January 1879 to the rear.From the library of prominent English botanist television presenter author and environmental campaigner David Bellamy.Remarked upon by Francis Darwin as a work that was 'widely reviewed and excited much interest among the general public' this is a lovely copy of a very scarce later work from Charles Darwin. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally bright some bumping and with light marks to front board. Front hinge strained a bit but with board holding firm. Internally firmly bound. One spot present from page 586 to 591 with some spotting to final leaf of publisher's advertisements. Pages otherwise exceptionally clean and bright. Very Good John Murray hardcover

It has always pleased me to exalt plants in the scale of organised beings First edition first issue of Darwin's penultimate book continuing his experiments with climbing plants and prepared with the assistance of his son Francis. The first issue is distinguished by the presence of two lines of errata on p. x which are corrected in the second issue of the same year. The collaborative authorship proclaimed on the title page reflects Darwin's interest in introducing his children into the world of science. Francis Darwin had trained as a doctor but turned from medicine to botany initially working as secretary and assistant to his father. In 1876 he had been for some months at the University of Würzburg learning laboratory methods from Julius Sachs. "The book was an extension of Charles Darwin's work on climbing plants and it showed that the same mechanisms can be observed in plants in general. By extending the idea of irregular circumnutation the Darwins analysed the growth movement of plants in response to factors of the environment such as light gravity and wounds. In addition they demonstrated that the mechanism of curvature in both roots and shoots was the result of differential growth rates. They could also confirm that the effect of the stimuli on the growth movement was indirect and that light and gravity act on some substance in the tip of the root and the shoot which is transmitted to other parts of the plant. Francis Darwin later refined some of the experimental techniques and modified their theoretical conclusions" ODNB. Provenance: with the ownership signature of Ralph W. Lewis dated 1949 on the half-title. Lewis was a professor of botany plant pathology biology and natural science at Michigan State University from 1937 to 1980. He is best known for his arguments in favour of formalizing evolutionary theory and recognizing evolution as a system of theories. Octavo. With 196 woodcuts in text; 32-page publisher's catalogue dated May 1878 at rear. Original green cloth spine lettered and decorated in gilt covers panelled in blind brown coated endpapers. Spine ends and corners gently bumped and rubbed small indentation at centre of spine some marks to rear cover professionally recased pp. 272-3 browned from slip of paper once laid in. Roughcut pageblock is tanned and discoloured light tanning to page edges foxing at rear couple of pages. Within pages are firmly bound and other than aforementioned content is unmarked. First issue with 2 lines of errata on page x.<br />"This was an extension of the work on climbing plants to show that the same mechanism holds good for flowering plants in general. It was another specialist book and seems to have sold fewer copies than any other and was not reprinted in England after the year of Darwin's death until modern facsimiles appeared of the first thousand in 1966 and the second in 1969.The first edition was published on November 6 1880 and it is recorded that 1500 copies were sold at Murray's autumn sale. It was in a standard green cloth binding and cost 15s. . In this issue there are two lines of errata on page x which are corrected in the second thousand of the same year. . In the third thousand of 1882 the last Murray printing the preface is slightly altered" Freeman p.161.<br />This work follows up on his earlier <em>On the Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants</em> 1865 and was based on experiments that he conducted with the assistance of his son Francis Darwin. On p.569-70 he suggests natural selection as a possible explanation for plants' ability to bend towards or away from environmental stimuli.</p> John Murray hardcover

Presentation copies from Darwin in his own hand are exceptionally rare most presentation copies were inscribed "from the author" by the publisher; a copy inscribed to a family member by Darwin himself is extraordinarily so. <br /> <br /> Elizabeth Darwin known as Bessy was Charles and Emma Darwin's youngest daughter and perhaps the most enigmatic of all their ten children. She is remembered as a quiet soul who lived in the family home until the death of her mother and then in a cottage on her own near her three brothers until her death in 1926. The book which Darwin has inscribed to her was written with the assistance of her brother Francis who had himself become an accomplished botanist. It is an extension of Darwin's earlier work on movement in climbing plants showing that the same mechanisms hold true for flowering plants in general. It was well reviewed and immediately sold 1500 copies.<br /> <br /> Darwin was an exceptionally affectionate father whose anxious feelings for his own children greatly spurred his study of inherited characteristics and of evolution. He and his wife Emma were first cousins a genetic liability that tormented him. This book written in partnership with one of his children and presented to another is a potent testament to the intertwining of scientific genius and fatherhood that so characterized Darwin and catalyzed his momentous career. Books inscribed by Darwin to his children are extremely rare on the market. The last such book at auction - a copy of The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex inscribed by Darwin to his daughter Henrietta who had edited the book - sold for £90000 at Sotheby's in 2015. unknown

18952240124New York: D. Appleton and Company 1895. Hardcover. Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover brick red cloth boards with black design on front. Exterior shows spotting and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The rear board and a portion of the front board also show light spots near the bottom outside edge likely from moisture which is limited only to the exterior of the book. The interior binding is good at the hinge is but some of the quadrants of pages particularly around volume 1 page 235 are a bit offset and stick out from the exterior fore edge. All the pages are secure it's just that this part has some pulling. This addition advertises "two volumes in one" with additions and corrections from the sixth and last English edition. Volume 1 in this book contains 365 pages the second half of the book is volume 2 which contains 322 plus the index. The front end page and opposite pastedown both contain the original owners names and info the pastedown portion is written in pencil. No other handwriting found in the book no bookplates no library markings. There is also a small tear on the rear pastedown in the upper left corner. This may have been caused when the book was originally bound as it is all securely glued place. The rear board also has an indentation along the top edge most of which has been straightened out but there is still a small soft area. <br/> <br/> D. Appleton and Company hardcover
